Overall, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced 160 child product recalls, the group said, but said progress is being made in the safety arena.

"These recalls show that we still have a long way to go before children are fully protected from unsafe products," Nancy Cowles, executive director of Kids In Danger, said in a statement. "At the same time, CPSC has taken actions that have had a measurable and definitively positive impact on children's product safety. We can take heart that we are moving in the right direction."
Continue reading 44 Million Children's Products Involved in 18 Deaths Recalled in 2010

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Congress Gives Consumers a Gift, But Some Want to Take it Back

Filed under: Retail, Consumer Ally, Recalls, China, Investing
Consumers ought to have a lot of friends. After all it's our money that fuels business in this country - and a lot of other countries, for that matter.

In about a week, the government is slated to unveil a tool for consumers that catalogs safety concerns and complaints about certain products. The database, which was approved by Congress a few years ago, will allow consumers to make better informed decisions about what the products they buy.

To little surprise, there's a move in Congress to try to undo it at the last minute. Like sharks sensing blood, industry is circling for the kill. Why? Because big business is afraid that knowledge is power -- and they don't want consumers to have knowledge or power.
Continue reading Congress Gives Consumers a Gift, But Some Want to Take it Back

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Galeos Dressing, a Biggest Loser Favorite, Flunks Another Round of Tests

Filed under: Health Care, Retail, Food, Consumer Ally
Galeos Dressing, much hyped as a low-calorie and low-fat dressing promoted by trainer Jillian Michaels and eaten by contestants on the reality show "The Biggest Loser," has failed another set of laboratory tests.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Disney reported receiving six complaints. The CPSC said it appears the problem is related to current from the battery's watch interacting with nickel in the watch back. The deaths of a six-month-old Conway, S.C., boy and a 10-month-old Washington, D.C., girl were reported to the CPSC in the past year. The agency said it learned in January that the product involved in the South Carolina death was a Summer Infant video monitor.
Consumer Ally partner Steve Noviello, consumer reporter for KDFW in Super Bowl host city Dallas, shared with us his look at what rights consumers have when the unexpected happens -- like going to a sporting even and finding out your seat is missing or having soup dumped in your lap at a restaurant.

Most of the negative reaction centered on the accusation that grain-based pet foods, such as Science Diet and Purina, are bad for animals and that Science Diet is part of a conspiracy with the veterinary community.

We invited GoodGuide to respond to criticism, which it did, and now Colgate Palmolive subsidiary Hill's has too.
Continue reading Hill's Science Diet Responds to Pet Food Ratings Flap

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Government Issues Recall of Another Lethal Crib

Filed under: Retail, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
The federal government issued a warning today about the SafetyCraft line of cribs, which is believed to be identical to a brand of cribs blamed in the deaths of three babies and puts infants at risk of suffocation or strangulation.

The low-cost, drop-side cribs were made by now-defunct Generation 2 Worldwide, whose Childesigns brand was recalled a year ago after being connected to 20 other incidents, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Those who have the cribs mentioned in this recall are urged to get rid of them.
Continue reading Government Issues Recall of Another Lethal Crib

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Consumer Ally Responds to Dog Food Ratings Brouhaha

Filed under: Retail, Food, Consumer Ally
When we ran the results of GoodGuide's ratings of pet food, we learned just how passionate some people are about their dogs.

After hundreds of comments, hundreds more emails and untold discussions about GoodGuide's choice of Science Diet as its top brand, we turned back to GoodGuide to respond to the criticism. We've also reached out to Science Diet and -- based on the conversation started by our readers -- we will be doing our own story about what to look for when you going shopping for pet food.

The main issues leveled against Consumer Ally and its partner, GoodGuide.com, involve encouraging support for a product critics said is made primarily from grains and filler. And some suggested the food includes the rendered remains of pets and that veterinarians nationwide are complicit in an elaborate bribery plot that now involves GoodGuide and AOL.

"Your list of good dog foods is a crime. Science Diet is one of the worst dog foods available, as are the rest of the ones you listed as 'good,' one reader wrote. "I can guess who put you up to this ridiculous article. How do you sleep at night, (expletive deleted)?
Continue reading Consumer Ally Responds to Dog Food Ratings Brouhaha

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Consumer Ally Interview: Toys R Us CEO Jerry Storch Talks Safety

Filed under: Retail, Consumer Ally, Recalls
Toys R Us CEO Jerry Storch is proud his stores have collected and destroyed more than 300,000 children's products. There's a reason for the destruction and there's a reason for his boasting about it.

Too often there are examples of companies that seem to disregard the safety of consumers -- even child-product manufacturers who knowingly leave dangerous products on the market.

So, when a company tries to do something with a nod toward safety -- even if it benefits its bottom line -- it's worth noting.

But a dozen recalls involved more than 1 million products apiece and left consumers scrambling to repair, replace or get rid of products found to pose safety hazards or have dangerous defects.

When McDonald's recalled 12 million Shrek glasses over concerns they had dangerous levels of cadmium, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission had yet to set official limits for what constituted dangerous. When they did a few months later, the result was the Shrek glasses would not have been recalled.

So, here are the 10 largest recalls of 2010 issued by the CPSC by the number of products recalled:
Continue reading The 10 Biggest Consumer Product Recalls of 2010

Permalink | Email this | Comments

2 Million Heaters Sold at Walmart Recalled, Blamed in Fires

Filed under: Retail, Consumer Ally, Family Money, Investing
More than 2 million portable electric heaters sold at Walmart stores are being recalled after 21 incidents, including fires in which four consumers were hurt, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said.

Flow Pro, Airtech, Aloha Breeze & Comfort Essentials 1500 watt heaters are being recalled. They are gray and have vents and metal handles. The Chinese-made heaters were sold at Walmart stores for about $18 between December 2001 and October 2009. They have the model number 1013 on the label that is on the bottom left on the back of the heater.
Continue reading 2 Million Heaters Sold at Walmart Recalled, Blamed in Fires

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Feds Change the Way Cribs Must be Made; Nearly All Cribs Unsafe Under New Rules

Filed under: Retail, Consumer Ally, Recalls
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today made sweeping changes about how cribs must be made -- banning the once ubiquitous drop-side crib -- and requiring safety standards that few cribs on the market today can meet. That means virtually every crib in use or for sale in the country today will be considered unsafe under the new standards.

About 10 million cribs have been recalled in the past few years as the enormity of the design failings of drop-side cribs have become more clear in the face of hundreds of documented incidents, including some 50 deaths over the past decade. The main culprits have been the drop-side crib and flimsy hardware. The resulting hazard has caused infants to get trapped -- and sometimes suffocate -- when gaps opened between the side of the crib and the mattress.
Continue reading Feds Change the Way Cribs Must be Made; Nearly All Cribs Unsafe Under New Rules

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Consumer Complaints Against DIRECTV lead to $14 million Settlement

DIRECTV, one of the most complained-about companies in the country, has reached a settlement with all 50 states and the District of Columbia on a variety of consumer protection issues, including its notorious cancellation penalties.
