Fisher-Price recalls 210,800 Little People Builders' Load 'n Go Wagons in the United States and Canada after seven children have been hurt, including five who needed stitches after falling on a rigid, molded plastic wagon handle, the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission said. Included in the recall is the wagon with the model number P8977, which can be found on the bottom of the wagon. Consumers should take the wagon away from children and call Fisher-Price for a repair kit at (800) 432-5437 weekdays between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. EST.

Walmart posted the recall from distributor Agromod Produce Inc. on its website, noting that the fruit had been sold in its stores.

Agromod recalled all of its fresh, whole papayas sold before Saturday (July 23) in stores nationwide and in Canada because they could be contaminated with salmonella, the FDA said. Salmonella can cause a potentially life-threatening infection in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems. Even healthy people can suffer from fever, nausea and diarrhea.
Continue reading Walmart Warns Shoppers of Recalled Papayas

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Recall Roundup: Pressure Washer Attachment, Fruit Pies and More

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Keeping track of the latest product and food recalls can be a challenge for any consumer, so Consumer Ally has collected them all in one place for you to check each week.

Here is this week's roundup:

Homelite Consumer Products Inc. recalled 41,200 pressure washer attachments sold exclusively at Home Depot stores nationwide and in Canada because the nozzle and spray bar can break and hit consumers. said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The company has received nine reports of incidents, including one consumer who was cut and three reports of minor property damage. The CPSC lists the model numbers affected by the recall. The units were sold from February 2010 through June 2011 for about $70 as an attachment and for about $450 when sold with a pressure washer. Consumers should call Homelite at (800) 867-9624 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. EST for a replacement.

The problem involves a plastic slider on a multifunction switch that can warp, making it impossible for the switch to turn on the truck's turn signals, tail lights, hazard warning flashers or brake lights, which could increase the risk of a crash, the NHTSA said.

In a letter to the NHTSA, Ford said it was unaware of any accidents or injuries as of July 5 that were connected to the recalled part.
Continue reading Ford Recalls 26,715 Ranger Trucks Over Light Issue

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How to Avoid Being a Victim of ATM Skimming

Filed under: Identity Theft, Consumer Ally, Investment Fraud, Ripoffs & Scams, Investing
The next time you're in a rush to grab some cash from an ATM or fill up at the gas pump, take a few extra seconds and check over the machine before swiping your card. Otherwise, you could fall victim to a skimmer, the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned recently.

The FBI's warning came a day after a Bulgarian national was sentenced to 21 months in prison for taking part in a scheme that used ATM skimming devices to steal more than $1.8 million from at least 1,400 bank accounts in the New York City area.

What makes ATM skimming insidious is that thieves attach devices to the ATM that go undetected by the consumers -- they look like just another part of the ATM. Those units then collect information from the card's magnetic strip, storing it or sending it to the criminals, the FBI said. Small cameras can also be used to record the consumer's hand movements to obtain the PIN number for the card.
Continue reading How to Avoid Being a Victim of ATM Skimming

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Recall Roundup: Whole Foods Mini Croissants, Enchilada Sauce, Dodge Rams and More

Filed under: Food, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Keeping track of the latest product and food recalls can be a challenge for any consumer, so Consumer Ally has collected them all in one place for you to check each week.
Here is this week's roundup:

Posh Bakery recalled all of its Butter Mini Croissants and Chocolate Mini-Croissants sold under the Whole Foods brand because of an egg wash that wasn't listed on the labels, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The mini croissants were sold at 26 Whole Foods Markets in Northern California. The FDA lists the UPC numbers and the stores that carried the baked goods. So far, only one allergic reaction has been reported. Consumers can return them for a refund. Call Posh Bakery at (408) 980-8451 weekdays between noon and 8 p.m. EST.

Once the tie rod breaks, the left front wheel could move independently without being controlled by the steering wheel, creating a loss of directional stability and increasing the risk of a crash. The NHTSA knows of 12 complaints from consumers about the tie rod breaks and opened a preliminary investigation into the issue in April.
Continue reading Chrysler Recalls 242,780 Dodge Ram Trucks Over Steering Issue

Permalink | Email this | Comments

LimeWire Warning Consumers of Security Risks in Its Software

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Ripoffs & Scams, Investing
The makers of the beleaguered LimeWire peer-to-peer software have agreed to notify consumers that using the file-sharing program can expose private information, said Maryland Attorney General Douglas F. The Consumer Protection Division of Gansler's office had been investigating LimeWire, alleging that some versions of the software had features that left consumers unknowingly vulnerable to sharing information they might not want to share, including Social Security numbers, tax records, private family documents or family videos.
Under the settlement that ended the probe, the makers of LimeWire software, Lime Group LLC, Lime Wire LLC, and their former owner, Mark Gorton, agreed to notify Maryland consumers that file-sharing software, products and services often contain a risk of inadvertent file sharing.
Continue reading LimeWire Warning Consumers of Security Risks in Its Software

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Recall Roundup: Ball Gloves, 7-Eleven Meals, Votives, Sprouts and More

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Keeping track of the latest product and food recalls can be a challenge for any consumer, so Consumer Ally has collected them all in one place for you to check each week.
Mizuno USA Inc. recalled 131,000 Mizuno Supreme Series and Ballpark Pro baseball and softball gloves because they contain a variety of molds that could cause respiratory and other infections, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. So far, no one has reported getting sick from using the gloves. The agency lists the model numbers of the recalled gloves. The gloves were sold at Walmart and Target stores nationwide from April 2010 through May 2011 for between $24 and $60 each. Consumer should call Mizuno for a refund at (800) 451-7913 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. EST.

As part of the penalty agreement, the Greenwood, Miss., company admitted no wrongdoing and denies the CPSC allegations. The agreement has been provisionally accepted by the CPSC.
In June 2009, Viking recalled 45,326 built-in, side-by-side refrigerator/freezers and refrigerators with bottom freezers after getting 57 reports of doors detaching, including four reports of consumers suffering such injuries as bruises, strains, and broken toes and fingers. The appliances had been sold in stores nationwide from July 1999 through April 2006 for between $4,725 and $6,400.
Continue reading Viking Range Fined for Knowing About Alleged Refrigerator Defects

<a href=http://Viking Range agrees to $450,000 fine to settle refrigerator defect allegations>Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Diced Ham Recalled Over Listeria Fears

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Carolina Pride Foods Inc. recalled more than nine tons of boneless, diced and fully cooked ham products sold in six states because they may be contaminated with listeria monocytogenes, said the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Unfortunately, nightmares, too.

Just ask the couple whose wedding and reception was supposed to be at a mansion in the Tampa, Fla., area -- before the property owner canceled three weeks before their big day.

The groom told Reddit they managed to save the day by moving the whole shebang to a family member's farm, where they had a rip-roaring party. "I can't even say 'It went okay' as a joke," the groom wrote on Reddit. "It was epic. Here is this week's roundup:

Hamilton Beach recalled 300,000 toasters because the heating elements can remain energized and could ignite if an item is placed in the toaster, creating a fire hazard, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Hamilton Beach has received 15 reports of toasters that didn't pop-up as intended, including three reports of minor damage to kitchen cabinets. So far, no one has been hurt. Included in the recall are the company's classic chrome two-slice toasters (Model no. 22600) with series codes that begin with the letters C or D, and have the format of CXXXXBI or DXXXXBI, where XXXX is a four-digit number ranging from 0190 through 5290. The model number and series code are printed on the bottom of the toaster. The toaster has a chromed steel exterior, a front control panel with a rotary toast shade selector and function buttons arranged in an arc, a front removable crumb tray and Hamilton Beach printed across the front of the toaster. Consumers should call Hamilton Beach for a new toaster at (800) 379-2200.

The CPSC recently issued a safety alert and video and also released a 2010 death and injury report on fireworks in advance of the holiday weekend. The agency said 8,600 were hurt last year by fireworks -- 40% of whom were children younger than 15. And most of those hurt were injured in the 30 days around the Fourth of July. Three people died last year because of fireworks.

"From purchase to ignition, know how you and your family can stay safe and which fireworks are allowed in your state if fireworks are part of your July 4th celebration," CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum said in a statement. "Never assume that a fireworks device is safe based on its size, and never allow young children to play with or light fireworks. By knowing the dangers of all types of fireworks, consumers can prevent tragedies."
Continue reading Fireworks Tips to Keep You Safe This Fourth of July

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Best -- and the Dirtiest -- Beaches in the U.S.

Filed under: Health Care, Consumer Ally, Travel, Investing
Just in time for the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the environmental watchdog group Natural Resources Defense Council released its 21st annual report card of 200 of the nation's cleanest and dirtiest beaches based on water quality.

While vacationers who booked beach places months in advance for this holiday weekend may not be able to change their plans, the report reveals which beaches could have issues with contaminated water, which may help keep beachgoers safe.

This year's report, "Testing the Waters: A Guide to Water Quality at Vacation Beaches," looked at the 2010 beach water testing results -- the most recent results available -- of more than 3,000 locations nationwide and gave star ratings to 200 beaches nationwide. Beaches in the Southeast, along the New York-New Jersey coast and in the Delaware, Maryland and Virginia regions had the cleanest beaches.
Continue reading The Best -- and the Dirtiest -- Beaches in the U.S.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Tylenol Caplets Recalled Over Foul Odor

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Consumer complaints of a foul, moldy odor has prompted McNeil Consumer Healthcare to recall almost 61,000 bottles of Tylenol Extra Strength Caplets in 225-count bottles, the company said.

The musty smell has been linked to trace amounts of 2,4,6-tribromoanisole -- also known as TBA -- which is a residue of a fungicide used to treat the wooden pallets on which the bottles of the over-the-counter medicine are stored. The same chemical is responsible for the recall of millions of bottles of Tylenol and other Johnson and Johnson drugs since December 2009.

While not considered to be toxic, TBA can cause a foul odor and has been linked to temporary and non-serious gastrointestinal maladies, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
Continue reading Tylenol Caplets Recalled Over Foul Odor

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Salmonella Outbreak Has Sickened 21 in Five States

Filed under: Food, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
State and federal authorities have linked a salmonella outbreak that has sickened 21 people in five states to alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts, said the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As of Monday, the 21 people sickened with salmonella enteritidis included three that had to be hospitalized; those sickened ranged in age from 12 to 77 years old and live in Idaho (3 people), Montana (7), North Dakota (1), New Jersey (1) and Washington (9), the CDC said. Investigators have linked the outbreak with alfalfa sprouts and spicy sprouts from Evergreen Produce Inc. of Idaho.
Continue reading Salmonella Outbreak Has Sickened 21 in Five States

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nestle Purina Recalls Cat Food Over Salmonella Fears

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Nestle Purina PetCare Co. recalled 870 bags of dry cat food sold in three states because it may be contaminated with salmonella, said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

So far, no one has reported getting sick from handling the food, and there have been no reports of cats being sickened, the agency said. Consumers can contract salmonella through handling contaminated food or their infected pets. Salmonella can cause a potentially life-threatening infection in young children, the elderly or those with weakened immune systems.

Even normally healthy people can suffer from diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. Pets get many of the same symptoms and also appear lethargic.
Continue reading Nestle Purina Recalls Cat Food Over Salmonella Fears

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Recall Roundup: Baby Sandals, Salad Blend, Strollers and More

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Investing
Keeping track of the latest product and food recalls can be a challenge for any consumer, so Consumer Ally has collected them all in one place for you to check each week.

Here is this week's roundup:

Target recalled 51,700 pairs of Circo Aloma Infant Girls Sandals because the decorative plastic flowers can detach, creating a choking hazard, said the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Target has received eight reports of the flowers popping off, but so far, no one has been hurt. The recalled infant girls sandals are white with decorative plastic flowers attached to the toes and sides. The sandals were sold under the style name "Aloma" in infant girls' sizes 2 through 5. "Circo" is printed on the inside and bottom of the shoe. Consumers should return them to any Target store for a refund. Call Target at (800) 440-0680 weekdays between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. EST.
