The U.S. economy added 216,000 positions, making unemployment dip down to 8.8%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

With 13 months of slow but steady job growth, some experts believe that we've turned a corner. Employment placement giant Adecco Staffing U.S. is bullish about job prospects well into summer. And typical summer job seekers, teens and college age who were hit hard by the recession, will be in for a surprise this season.

Here are four tips to make your summer a profitable one:
Continue reading 4 Tips on Landing a Summer Job

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. She's given a box after presenting a picture I.D. Her purchase is then logged.

The 37-year-old mom of two told WalletPop that she's willing to go through all that because "I like the original formula. It works better."

For consumers like Hilligan living in states like Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, Nevada and Oklahoma, cold and allergy season may hit a little harder and take a bigger bite out their wallets this year.
Continue reading Why You May Soon Need a Prescription for Sudafed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. If you're one of those who want to use it and not lose it, here are seven tips on how to blow your money in a short time:

1. Stockpile Supplies

Getting over-the-counter medicine may require a prescription these days, but if you're visiting the doctor before March 15, ask your physician for several months' supply of the OTC drugs that you and your family often use. However, be aware that some doctors may be reluctant to do so because of malpractice concerns, while others may charge a prescription fee as high as $10 for each Rx.

If your physician doesn't want to help stock your medicine cabinets until the kids are grown, there are lots of other items that can take a big bite out of your FSA account, including prescription sunglasses, contact lenses for a year or more, First Aid kits for every place your kids are, breast pumps and durable medical equipment such as a wheelchair.
Continue reading Seven Tips for Spending Down Your FSA Fast!

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. The private sector added 192,000 jobs last month, with all sectors adding workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

One area that has been steadily adding jobs and will continue to do so through 2011 is the temporary staffing industry, according to Bob Kovalsky, senior vice president of Adecco Staffing U.S., a division of the world's largest employment agency.

"While permanent jobs are being created more slowly than anyone expected, temporary jobs have increased month over month," he told WalletPop in a telephone interview. "Companies are trying to be more productive. As a result, temporary work may be a way to demonstrate to a potential employer your capabilities and help you gain new skill sets for the future."
Continue reading Four Temp Job Hunting Tips From Adecco Staffing Exec

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. And we're not talking about the sweat you need to shed for that killer body. Women spend nearly $450,000 for a lifetime of beauty products and treatments, according to Newsweek.com's "The Beauty Breakdown." That's a huge investment in these tough economic times.

But keeping up appearances doesn't have to be so pricey. WalletPop asked a number of beauty experts to help us find ways to save on our beauty bill. Here's what they recommend:

Haircuts

Our hair is our crowning glory, and we treat it as such -- we shell out on average $252 a year on haircuts, according to the Professional Beauty Association. But you can slash that bill by a third by selecting a long hairstyle that doesn't require a lot of maintenance.
Continue reading Frugal Tips to Help You Afford Your Inner Diva

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. One day you're up, another day, you're down. It doesn't help that while companies are announcing record profits, the Federal Reserve expects unemployment to remain close to 9% throughout 2011.

Martin D. Weiss, author of The Ultimate Money Guide for Bubbles, Busts, Recessions and Depressions, told WalletPop in a telephone interview that he "foresees more bubbles and busts ahead."

"The first bubble and bust was tech stocks in the early 2000's and the second was housing. It looks like we're moving into a third one. We may see a bust as governments are forced to slash their budgets, lay off core personnel and reform pensions."

To protect yourself and your money, here are four steps he recommends to take:
Continue reading Investing Tips for 2011 From Ratings Guru Martin Weiss

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. Passed in 2009 to protect American consumers from predatory credit card practices and enacted last year, this piece of federal legislation has proven to be something of a success, according to BillShrink, the money-saving search engine.

"At a certain level, the CARD Act achieved its high-level objectives," Schwark Satyavolu, BillShrink's CEO and co-founder, told WalletPop in a telephone interview. "Banks ran up rates to 30% in some cases beforehand, but after the act [passed], rates only moved 2% to 3%. That's meant the 30 million Americans who have paid into their FSAs have left about $450 million of tax-free money unclaimed by the time the deadline rolls around, according to Jeremy Miller, founder and president of FSAStore.com, a one-stop shopping site for FSA-friendly products and services.

Most of this unspent cash goes back to those who don't exactly need it: your employers. To make sure you're making the most of your FSA, here are four steps you can take.
Continue reading Four Steps to Maximize Your Flexible Spending Account

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. Remember margarine, the Atkins Diet and Barbie, to name a few?

WalletPop asked experts for other products that consumers have fallen out of love with lately. Here are five they say are experiencing a backlash:

1. Bottled Water

The idea of bottling water has been around since the 1800s, for medicinal reasons. But the bottled water craze that hit in the 1990s was as much about prestige as health. Water coming from exotic places like Fiji and Évian-les-Bains hyped their better taste as well as their "cleaner," healthier origins as compared to local tap water.
Continue reading Five Products Facing Consumer Backlash

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. Before you fire up the software or the mobile app or talk to your accountant, Kathy Pickering, executive director of H&R Block's Tax Institute, offers seven tips to help manage this stressful event:

Prepare Like Always
Tax season is a little strange this year. The deadline for filing tax returns with the Federal government and most states is April 18. However, Montana, Tennessee and Georgia still have due dates of April 15.

In addition, due to the late passage of the tax bill, the IRS says it needs until February 14 to be ready to accept itemized returns.
Continue reading Tax Tips From H&R Block

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Lan N. In 2008, 626,400 employer businesses were started, according to the Small Business Administration. In December, 103,000 jobs were added, disappointing some experts who had predicated a growth of 150,000 new positions. On the other hand, unemployment dropped from 9.8% to 9.4%.
