Here we go again: Congressional Republicans and White House Democrats are engaging in a game of rhetorical warfare over the budget. If the parties don't agree on a plan by March 4, the federal government could close, rattling stock and bond markets.
The Untold Story of the U.S. Trade Deficit: Rising Exports

Energy, Columns, Economy, General Electric , Boeing, Deere & Co

The U.S. trade gap widened to just under $500 billion in 2010, but that obscures impressive growth in global sales of U.S. goods. And the outlook for 2011 is even better. Still, to reach a trade surplus, America must solve two serious problems.
Is Oil Output Peaking or Not? Either Way, Cheap Oil Is Gone for Good
6:00 PM 2/11/2011

Proponents of the peak-oil theory can muster studies and statistics backing their claim that declining global oil output is nigh. Critics point to new technologies and unconventional oil fields as saviors. Either way, a return to the days of $1.50-a-gallon gasoline isn't going to happen.
What U.S. Energy Policy Needs: Less Coal, More Uranium
6:00 PM 2/11/2011

With cleaner air and energy self-sufficiency high on America's list of priorities, our irrational dislike of nuclear power looks increasingly imprudent. China, France and the U.K. have raced ahead safely on nuclear power: It's well past time for the U.S. to start catching up.

Another good week for the U.S. economy: Initial jobless claims fell below the key 400,000 level, and the consumer sentiment index rose to its highest point in eight months, indicating that Americans are increasingly confident that better days are ahead.
Employment Costs: This Often-Ignored Index Deserves a Closer Look
12:00 PM 2/8/2011

Compiled by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the ECI usually gets little attention from the general media. Here's why it's a statistic worth tracking: Its current tiny increases are helping keep inflation in check and allowing the Fed to stick to its stimulative policies.
Where the Signs Point to a Strengthening U.S. Economy
10:00 AM 2/6/2011

If you glanced at just one or two headlines from last week's reports on the U.S. economy, you might have concluded that things haven't changed that much. In fact, digging deeper reveals that business conditions are improving. Even the puzzling payroll report has hopeful indicators.
Why America Should Be Driving on Natural Gas
8:45 PM 2/4/2011

Unless there's a breakthrough in battery technology, gasoline will remain the primary auto fuel in the U.S. for years. But our dependence on imported oil comes with a major risk of supply disruption. And the U.S. has a domestic alternative that's ready and reliable: natural gas.
What's Really Ailing Employment: Lack of Demand
11:00 AM 2/4/2011

Many people blame America's high unemployment rate on a mismatch between workers' skills and the fields with open jobs. But jobs are scarce across all sectors. That means effective policies are needed to stimulate demand and rebuild economic output.

Private employers added 187,000 jobs in January, ADP announced Wednesday, 47,000 more then economists had predicted. That marks the fourth straight month of significant job gains -- a trend that suggests the U.S. labor market is recovering.
