Jack Bauer's rugged bad-ass persona sustained eight days of hell over the course of eight television seasons in the popular television series 24. Now that the show has aired its final season finale, Bauer -- played by Keifer Sutherland -- can finally take a breather. But, as industry watchers and fans alike speculate, the two fateful hours that closed Day 8 were the beginning, not the end of the 24 franchise -- and its steady stream of revenue.

When the credits rolled on last night's episode, cash registers across America started ringing. Toy makers, retailers and others began trying to cash in on the finale-fever inspired buzz. Currently on Ebay, (EBAY) there are over 1,660 24 items for sale: everything from "Jack Bauer forever" wristbands priced from $3.50 to overpriced action figures selling for as much as $145. Electronics giant Best Buy (BBY) slashed prices on DVDs of individual seasons of 24 offering discounts of 10% to 40% for each season. And, on Amazon, shoppers are filling their carts with books, posters and just about anything "Jack".

Will Day 9 Be Spent on the Silver Screen?

So while Jack may have headed off into exile on Monday night, it's hard to believe that his creators will let him stay there for long. In fact, it would not be surprising if Jack ends up traveling a road previously tread upon by dozens of pairs of Manolo Blahniks in the past: the silver screen. Few TV series have attempted what Carrie, Charlotte, Miranda and Samantha of Sex and the City have accomplished in movie theaters. But, then again, very few TV characters have the chutzpa of Jack Bauer.

Rumors of a 24 movie have swirled around Hollywood for years. In 2006, Sutherland told MTV a script was in development. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly's web site EW.com, 24 exec producer Howard Gordon confirmed that he'll be one of the producers on the movie project and that there is already a script for the dramatic thriller. If Hollywood insiders are correct, that script was penned by "State of Play" writer Billy Ray.

According to IMDB, the first season of 24 had modest budget of $35 million. Industry insiders speculate the blockbuster-hopeful will have a budget of up to ten times that. Although the movie's plot has yet to be leaked, insiders are reassuring fans the movie will not be a prequel. Because the current script was based on a pitch made before last night's finale, Gordon told EW "The movie has to defer to the end of the TV show, not the other way around." So look for last night's episode to be a factor when Jack comes back on the big screen.

The Peeps are here! Love 'em or hate 'em, those neon, sugar-coated marshmallow candy chicks that are synonymous with springtime landed in Easter baskets and showed up at holiday celebrations this weekend. And many peep-lovers blew both their financial and caloric budgets all in the name of a good "Peep fix."
Wanting to get to the bottom of this cult-like food craze, WalletPop decided to find out just why people will go out of their way to buy a box or two of marshmallow Peeps and discover exactly how much we're willing to spend on those cavity-inducing chickies.
Continue reading Peeps candy and other snack food addictions

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Ads pitch sex-related drugs, tobacco to teen girls

Marketing to teen girls has crossed the line; several, in fact. Sandwiched in between ads for acne drugs and Gossip Girl are ads filled with sex, tobacco, and other issues related to young girls' health.

Case in point: During this year's Academy Awards, TV viewers saw the newest ad from drug maker GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), which makes Cervarix, a cervical cancer vaccine approved by the Food and Drug Administration in October. Following the glitzy and glamorous tradition of the Academy Awards, the ad, aimed at preventing cervical cancer, was targeted at teens and young women.
Continue reading Ads pitch sex-related drugs, tobacco to teen girls

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Songs to get your finances on track

Katy Perry just might be onto something. Now, parents of kids with asthma have new reason to celebrate seeing an RV roll into their neighborhoods: It may offer life-saving help.

Breathmobiles are showing up on the streets of California, Phoenix, Arizona, Maryland and Chicago. These mobile clinics offer diagnosis and treatment of kids with not only asthma, but allergies, too. A few see adult patients as well.

Staffed with doctors, nurses and patient care workers, the Breathmobiles can perform allergy skin and lung-capacity testing, and offer parents the chance for their child to have a physical. Oh, and did we mention it's free?
And they're getting fatter ... earlier. According to a recent study published by the American Journal of Public Health, one in three low-income kids is obese -- a number that's obviously troubling pediatricians and nutrition experts. "Obesity is often seen as an adult's problem. But it's just as much of an issue with children, very young children," says registered dietician Jae Berman.

Kids don't just wake up one day obese at age 5 or 8. Some experts say the risk of being obese starts very early in infancy. "Too many parents think baby fat is cute," says Kendra Davis, an 18-year-old high school senior who has battled obesity her entire life. "I was one of the kids whose cheeks you'd like to pinch because they were so round and full. Everyone used to say 'how cute.' Now I have to worry that my life expectancy is drastically cut short because I'm more than 100 pounds overweight."
Continue reading Born obese: Are U.S. children doomed to an overweight life?

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Milk Money -- Savings Experiment

Filed under: Savings Experiment, Food & Beverage

These days, families feeling squeezed at the grocery store aren't asking themselves if they've "Got Milk." They're asking, "Got milk money?"

As someone who goes through nine gallons of milk in an average week, buying two at a time to cut down on trips to the store, getting the best deal in high on my weekly shopping list. That's why we scoured dairy departments to find the best price for a gallon of milk. Here's what you need to keep in mind the next time you're shopping.
Continue reading Milk Money -- Savings Experiment

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Find the Cheapest Milk -- Savings Experiment

Many said "It'll never happen," and thought..."no one will listen..." But a survey by the Avon Foundation for Women released on Monday found a quarter of states in the U.S. have either reduced or eliminated screening mammography and other early detection services for women under 50.

And opponents of the panel's guidelines are crying foul.

According to the Avon survey, states like California, New York, Florida, Illinois and Michigan are among those that have made changes in their state's breast-cancer screening programs since the government panel released its guidelines. This move has angered and confused women.
Continue reading Your money or your breast? But experts say many of the deceptively healthy foods parents toss in their carts should be left on the grocery store shelves.

So WalletPop sat down with registered dietician Susan Burke March, MS, RD, LD/N, CDE, author of Making Weight Control Second Nature: Living Thin Naturally to find out what so-called "healthy" foods parents should be wary of buying for their children.

Kid's yogurt
March says this is the equivalent of sprinkling lots of sugar and candy on top of a cup of steamed broccoli. "All the sugar that's in many brands turns something that's full of calcium, protein, vitamin D, and magnesium into dessert." The biggest offenders: yogurt "fun foods."

"Read the labels of yogurt in plastic tubes that are meant to be frozen and thrown into kids' lunchboxes. After the first ingredient, which as hoped for, is milk, come high fructose corn syrup and sugar, artificial flavorings and colors," says March.

A better option: March suggests staying wholesome by staying simple. "Freeze any wholesome real yogurt and put in your kid's knapsack. You'll ditch all the additives and send him to school with a truly healthy treat."

It keeps your schedule, makes sure you never miss an important email, helps you keep tabs on your kids -- and increases your thumb dexterity.

But smartphones aren't just for emailing, texting or even talking anymore. The flood of "apps" (applications) -- software programs made by third-party developers that you can download onto your phone -- allows users to do everything from making a Cosmopolitan to learning to speak Russian.

No one's denying that a bartender app doesn't come in handy. But there are also numerous apps that can help you improve your health -- and perhaps even lose a few pounds.

Here's our top 10 list of health apps to consider getting now.

Continue reading 10 smartphone apps that are good for your health

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Four 'healthy' foods that aren't so healthy after all

These days everything from cereal to vodka is fortified with vitamins and minerals. But getting 500% of a day's worth of vitamin C might not be necessary -- or have any health benefits at all. In fact, several experts say getting mega-doses of some vitamins might even be risky, not to mention costly.
Unfortunately, Sullivan ended up in the ER instead, as a result of dehydration.

"I got a bill for more than $10,000 for 18 hours in the emergency room," she says. Without insurance, Sullivan panicked. A friend suggested she try to "talk down" her bill. These pint-sized dynamos have honed sales skills that rival those of some of the most savvy adult professionals. If fact, some Scouts sell thousands of boxes per year.
But in an age where you're watching every penny, it can be equally hard to cough up between $3.50 and $4 for a box of 15 cookies -- even if those Samoas are perhaps the best thing that will ever cross your lips.

Despite their undeniable tastiness, there's no denying that, at $3.50 to $4 per box, Girl Scout cookies can be costly. But it might soften the blow to know where your cookie money really goes.
Continue reading Girl Scout cookies by the numbers: Just where do all those dollars go?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Aphrodisiac foods cheaper than you think for Valentine's Day romance

Filed under: Health Care, Retail, Economizer
Lovers, you've got a little more than one week until the hottest day of the year. No, we're not talking about summer solstice or the dog days of summer.

Feb. 14, Valentine's Day, the day devoted to red-hot romance, love and hearts, is notoriously hot, hot, hot. And whether lovers are toting home heart shaped boxes of chocolate under their arms, ordering in heart shaped pizzas or going out for a romantic dinner, food plays a big role in Valentine's celebrations.

So WalletPop thought we'd give lovers a helping hand this year. With the help of Dr. Melody Hart a practitioner at ChicagoHealers.com, we compiled a shopping list of must-have aphrodisiac foods. And, as an added bonus, most of these foods are pulling double duty, offering numerous health benefits, too.
Continue reading Aphrodisiac foods cheaper than you think for Valentine's Day romance

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Don't pinch your pennies, change them in for bigger bills

Filed under: Economizer, Personal Finance, How to Save Money

Looking to hang onto your hard-earned cash a little longer? Instead of pinching pennies, research suggests converting them into big bills.

Researchers from New York University found we tend to hang onto $50s, $20s and even $10s longer than we do $1s and $5s. The theory: It's more painful to part with a big bill than it is a little one.

"People tend to over-value large bills relative to an equivalent sum of money in smaller denominations because of self-control reasons," says one of the study's authors, Joydeep Srivastava, professor of marketing at University of Maryland. That "overvaluing" leads us to make more impulse purchase with small bills or "change" than if we the same amount of money (or even a few dollars less) in larger bills.
But too often Americans don't realize a plunging credit score can cost them big bucks on insurance premiums.

One of the biggest mistakes insurers say people make is not realizing when their credit score is tanking.

"Credit scores factor heavily into your rate," says Ashley M. Hunter, a construction-risk insurance specialist who owns HM Risk Group in Austin, Texas. That's because in the eyes of your insurer, if you've missed a few payments to your credit card company or have written a lot of bad checks (that wound up in collection), chances are you'll do the same thing to them.

Continue reading Auto insurance premiums tied to credit score

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Victims sue over too-hot hash browns, slippery toilet floors, and heartbreak

You'd likely complain if you were served cold coffee at a drive-through. But in 1994 Stella Liebeck sued McDonald's because she suffered burns when she spilled her hot joe on her lap while pulling out of the fast food giant's parking lot, prompting the application of stickers reminding customers that the hot coffee they're ordering will indeed be served hot.

But coffee isn't the oddest -- or most menacing -- defendant in lawsuits of late. American courts are over-crowded with plaintiffs looking for restitution as a result of a bevy of unusual circumstances. So inquiring minds asked "What were some of the most outrageous or scary lawsuits of 2009?"
Continue reading Victims sue over too-hot hash browns, slippery toilet floors, and heartbreak

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Life after bankruptcy: living well with bad credit

Filed under: Bankruptcy, Credit, Banking, Debt

It's no secret that Americans' paychecks and bank account balances have taken it on the chin during the past two years. With a record number of mortgage defaults and declared bankruptcies, it's a safe bet that more and more of those who once had good - or even average - credit are now living with a bad credit score.

For many, their good credit score and on-time payment status are like a badge of honor. Or at least, they used to be. And while in "the old days" (before the recession) many might not think twice of proclaiming "I have excellent credit" to passersby and family members alike, few would relish sharing news of their personal bankruptcy with the world - including family and the parents at school pickup.

Continue reading Life after bankruptcy: living well with bad credit

Permalink | Email this | Comments
