In a new advertising campaign run in major daily newspapers, the Yum! Brands chain defends the quality of its beef in an effort to counter negative perceptions.

"Thank you for suing us. Here's the truth about our seasoned beef," the ad copy reads, before launching into a detailed description of the percentages of beef and Secret Recipe seasonings the company uses. Those include salt, chili pepper, onion powder, tomato powder, garlic powder, cocoa powder, oats, caramelized sugar, yeast, citric acid, and "other ingredients that contribute to the flavor, moisture, consistency, and quality of our seasoned beef," the ad says.
Continue reading Taco Bell Has a Beef With Lawyers, Runs Nationwide Ads to Fight Back

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Potential for 'Super Bugs' in Meat, Dairy Products Alarms Regulators

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally
Bacteria that cause food poisoning but are resistant to drugs pose a serious health hazard, say food regulators, and should be a national priority since these "super bugs" have not been effectively controlled.

At a one-day conference in Washington, D.C., co-sponsored by the nonprofit consumer group Center for Science in the Public Interest and The Pew Charitable Trusts, food safety experts and officials agreed that decades-long misuse of antibiotics on the nation's farms has been largely responsible for the steady increase in e.coli, salmonella and other food-related outbreaks in recent years.

"The problem has clearly emerged with respect to some high-risk foods," said CSPI food safety director Caroline Smith DeWaal in a statement. "Both humans and animals rely on antibiotics to stay healthy. But overuse in some sectors may squander their effectiveness and leave consumers vulnerable to hard-to-treat foodborne infections."
Continue reading Potential for 'Super Bugs' in Meat, Dairy Products Alarms Regulators

Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Beef About Taco Bell Beef Goes to Court

Taco Bell is fending off a lawsuit filed last week against the fast-food giant which alleges that it uses too many non-meat fillers in its beef, and is threatening to sue its accusers of filing "false claims."

The complaint by an Alabama law firm says Taco Bell engages in false advertising when touting its "seasoned ground beef" or "seasoned beef" fare, because the company allegedly only uses about 35% real beef, with the remaining 65% containing various binders and extenders. Such mixture, including soybean oil and silicon dioxide, does not meet the USDA's minimum requirements to be labeled as "beef," according to the suit.
Continue reading The Beef About Taco Bell Beef Goes to Court

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Too Much Lead in Disney-themed Plastic Bags at Safeway, Group Says

Filed under: Health Care, Green, Retail, Consumer Ally
Disney-themed reusable shopping bags sold at Safeway carry more than 15 times the federal limit for lead in children's products, an environmental watchdog group has found.

The Center for Environmental Health, a California-based non-profit that crusades against the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products, reported the high levels of lead after it tested the bags, which feature "Toy Story" and "Cars" illustrations. The group also said this is not the first time Disney has allowed lead-tainted toys, baby products, and other items to be sold.
Continue reading Too Much Lead in Disney-themed Plastic Bags at Safeway, Group Says

Permalink | Email this | Comments

FDA Takes Steps to Limit Acetaminophen in Drugs

Filed under: Health Care, Consumer Ally
The Food and Drug Administration has announced it is taking steps to limit the amount of acetaminophen in prescription drugs, and to require boxed warnings on all prescription products that contain it, regardless of its dosage.

Acetaminophen, a widely used pain- and fever-reducing drug, can cause severe liver injury if taken in excess, the agency reminds. It also carries the risk of allergic reactions such as swelling of the face, mouth, and throat, difficulty breathing, itching, and rash.
Continue reading FDA Takes Steps to Limit Acetaminophen in Drugs

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Power Balance Admits Its Success Is in the Mind, Not Science

Filed under: Health Care, Retail, Consumer Ally, Ripoffs & Scams, Investing
Power Balance LLC, the company behind a wildly popular line of wristbands and pendants worn by professional athletes (who swear by their performance-enhancing effects) admits its marketing claims aren't backed by science.

The ads declare that the silicone wristbands, which come in five sizes and 16 colors, optimize the body's natural energies and improve balance, strength and flexibility. Citing ancient Eastern philosophies, the company says the technology was "founded" by athletes and is a favorite among the elite sports set.
Continue reading Power Balance Admits Its Success Is in the Mind, Not Science

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Reebok EasyTone Claims Found to Be Exaggerated, Misleading

Filed under: Health Care, Consumer Ally
Reebok, one of the leaders in fitness footwear, is facing criticism by the National Advertising Division of the Council of Better Business Bureaus over exaggerating the health and performance benefits of its top-selling EasyTone shoe line.
The shoemaker's claims include the promise that if women simply wear the sneakers, without necessarily engaging in other physical exercise, they can achieve up to 28% more of a workout for their glutes than if they were to walk in regular shoes.
Continue reading Reebok EasyTone Claims Found to Be Exaggerated, Misleading

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Banks, Brokers Deceive 'Less Combative' Seniors, Lawsuits Show

Filed under: Retirement, Banking, Consumer Ally

The case of a Wachovia client who recently sued the bank for turning a blind eye on a questionable practice that cracked her nest egg, and the attorney who helped her win back her losses, shines light on the hidden relationships between banks and brokerage firms that sell investment products.

In a claim against Wachovia, as in similar cases that securities fraud attorney Mark Tepper said he has tackled, a retired court clerk alleged a bank teller disregarded her request for opening an IRA account and instead told her to speak with a Wachovia financial adviser. The adviser was not an employee of the bank, but worked for its sister company Wachovia Securities, Inc. (now Wells Fargo Advisers), and had a desk on the premises of the bank.

Continue reading Banks, Brokers Deceive 'Less Combative' Seniors, Lawsuits Show

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Soda, Sugary Drinks Should Carry Warning Labels, Consumer Groups Say

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally

The Center for Science in the Public Interest, together with several health organizations, state agencies, and prominent scientists and nutrition experts, sent a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, reviving a comprehensive petition the group filed to the agency in 2005. The letter urges regulators to use their authority to raise public awareness of the hazards of excessive consumption of all beverages with more than 1.1 grams per ounce of sugar, high-fructose corn syrup or other added caloric sweeteners.

Continue reading Soda, Sugary Drinks Should Carry Warning Labels, Consumer Groups Say

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Hundreds of Illegal ATMs Found in Massachusetts

Filed under: Identity Theft, Banking, Consumer Ally, Ripoffs & Scams
An unusual investigation of non-bank automated teller machines in Massachusetts has found more than 300 ATMs operating without a license, and another 101 legal ones doing business despite various violations among their owners.

Non-bank ATMs are typically located in convenience stores, service stations and sometimes in communities where there are few banks. Under Massachusetts law, they must be approved and registered with the state, and must disclose withdrawal fees, owner contact data and other information to consumers.
Continue reading Hundreds of Illegal ATMs Found in Massachusetts

Permalink | Email this | Comments

FDA Warns Dietary Supplements Marketers to Stop Deceptive Claims

Filed under: Health Care, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Ripoffs & Scams
In a letter sent to dietary supplement manufacturers this week, the Food and Drug Administration addressed escalating concerns about undeclared or deceptively labeled ingredients in products marketed as "natural" alternatives to prescription drugs. The letter comes after nearly 300 consumer alerts and numerous consumer complaints of injury associated with the substances.

A string of recalls due to marketers' failure to disclose dangerous ingredients, which can be harmful when taken in combination with other drugs, have highlighted the risks to consumers seeking alternative treatments that claim prescription-strength results.
Continue reading FDA Warns Dietary Supplements Marketers to Stop Deceptive Claims

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Dannon to Pay $21 Million to Settle Charges It Overstated Yogurt's Health Benefits

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally

The FTC charged NBTY, Inc. and two subsidiaries, NatureSmart LLC and Rexall Sundown, Inc., with making false claims about the amount of DHA -- an Omega-3 fatty acid -- used in their products. While the vitamins' packaging extolled the health benefits of 100 milligrams of DHA, a daily serving of the Disney and Marvel multivitamins for children ages 4-years and older contained only a negligible trace of that amount.

According to the agency, one tablet or two gummies of the Disney and Marvel lines -- the equivalent of a daily serving -- contained just 0.1mg of DHA, or one-thousandth of the 100mg amount referred to in product advertising and packaging by the companies.

Continue reading Disney Vitamins Marketer, Others Settle Charges About Bogus Claims

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Millions of Rolaids Recalled After Bits of Metal, Wood Are Found

Filed under: Health Care, Consumer Ally, Recalls
Johnson & Johnson's troubled McNeil subsidiary announced a recall of more than 13 million packages of Rolaids because of consumer reports of metal and wood particles in the products.
The additives, mostly found in packaged and restaurant foods, have been linked to hyperactivity in children, as well as cancer and allergic reactions, according to clinical studies and evidence dating to the 1970s.
Continue reading FDA Makes a Move Toward Regulating Risky Food Dyes

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Food Safety Overhaul Passes Senate

Filed under: Health Care, Food, Consumer Ally, Recalls, Consumer Protection
Landmark food safety reform legislation that aims to curb the incidence of food recalls, foodborne illnesses and shoddy practices by American food producers and importers passed the U.S. Senate with broad bipartisan support today and is awaiting final approval by the House of Representatives before it is signed into law.
The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act, which has been stalled in the Senate for more than a year due to influential agribusiness interests, overhauls 70 years of antiquated laws and poor record of inspections by regulators. The bill, backed by a who's who of consumer and industry organizations, requires high-risk producers to be inspected much more frequently, vests the FDA with recall authority and sets rigorous standards for food safety at farms and factories.
Continue reading Food Safety Overhaul Passes Senate

Permalink | Email this | Comments

California Watchdog Group Finds Lead in Toys, Jewelry and Other Products

Some of the nation's biggest department stores, including Bloomingdale's, Nordstrom, Sears and Walmart have been selling lead-tainted jewelry, and others are offering contaminated toys, including the Hello Kitty brand, a health advocacy group reports.

The Center for Environmental Health, a California-based non-profit that crusades against the use of toxic chemicals in consumer products, says at least three retailers that sell children's products carry items with lead. The stores -- Sanrio, T.J.Maxx and Big Lots -- were notified by the California Attorney General's office that a Hello Kitty doll dress-up set, an NFL lunchbox, and a backpack that they've been selling violate federal consumer product safety laws.
Continue reading California Watchdog Group Finds Lead in Toys, Jewelry and Other Products

Permalink | Email this | Comments

McNeil Recalls Millions of Children's Benadryl, Motrin Packages

Filed under: Health Care, Retail, Consumer Ally, Recalls
A massive recall of children's Benadryl issued today by McNeil Consumer Healthcare is reminding parents and consumers that the long-playing saga of quality problems with popular over-the-counter and prescription drugs is not over.
The recall includes 4 million packages of Benadryl Allergy Fastmelt Tablets in cherry and grape flavors, 800,000 bottles of Motrin Junior Strength Caplets in 24-count packs, and a single lot of Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews.
Continue reading McNeil Recalls Millions of Children's Benadryl, Motrin Packages

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Better Business Bureau Issues Mea Culpa for Pay-to-Play Ratings

In exchange for $425, a dummy company named "Hamas" became an accredited BBB member and got an A- rating, while a neo-Nazi website called Stormfront got an A+. Oblivious to the terror group reference, the BBB listed the former as a business "providing educational programs for troubled youth."

Continue reading Better Business Bureau Issues Mea Culpa for Pay-to-Play Ratings

Permalink | Email this | Comments
