Sergio Marchionne, the CEO of Chrysler and Fiat, is nothing if not cagey. When he outmaneuvered the White House in 2009 to strike a great deal to take over Chrysler with U.S. government loans, it was considered a forgone conclusion that he would eventually take the company public in an initial public offering. Now, the CEO says the odds of an IPO are merely 50-50.

Marchionne says an IPO will be most likely if Fiat can't buy out the 41% stake in Chrysler held by the United Auto Workers health care trust. But, says Marchionne, he would prefer to see the Auburn Hills, Mich., automaker merge completely with Italian automaker Fiat. Marchionne has been CEO of both companies since Chrysler emerged from bankruptcy in 2009.

"My preference is to be one single company," Marchionne told reporters in Kokomo, Ind., on Thursday. "We belong together." Over the last four years, the two automakers have been blending their operations as Fiat has increased its stake in Chrysler, he noted. And the combination of the two automakers' product development and design has yielded superior financial results, as well as a group of new vehicles that have been met with enthusiasm from both the media and the public.

On Jan. 30, Marchionne said this about the IPO prospect. "In the absence internally of any [solution] at Fiat [to buy the UAW stake], we will be more than happy to accompany [the health care trust] to an initial public offering."
General Motors' (GM) earnings and market share were down in 2012 despite a better year for car sales in the U.S., a combination that soured Wall Street on the automaker's fourth quarter and year-end earnings report.

GM reported $4.7 billion in earnings for 2012, a sharp decline of 36 percent from the $7.6 billion it posted a year ago. The automaker's finances are on solid ground after its 2009 tax-payer assisted bankruptcy, but it underperformed a bit in the U.S., struggled in Europe amidst recession across the Atlantic and had a few special-item charges, all of which disappointed Wall Street.

Despite a 89 percent increase in fourth quarter earnings to $900 million, analysts and investors were especially disappointed with GM's performance in the final reporting period. They had forecast earnings of 51 cents a share, while the automaker's earnings came in at 48 cents a share. GM shares were down in down in pre-market trading and are expected to close lower today. GM's revenue was up slightly to $152.3 billion.

"We recorded another solid year in 2012 as we grew the business, delivered a third straight year of profitability and took significant actions to put the company on a solid path for future growth," said Dan Akerson, chairman and CEO. "This year our priorities will be executing flawless new vehicle launches, controlling costs and delivering more vehicles to our customers at outstanding value."

GM announced that it will issue profit-sharing checks of up to $6,750 to its 49,000 hourly U.S. workers. The payments, which are based on the company's performance in North America, are about $250 less than the GM's previous profit sharing checks.

Operating profit, a key indicator of how GM is doing, improved 14 percent to $1.25 billion for the fourth quarter and fell 5 percent to $7.9 billion for the full year.

The automaker's pre-tax loss in Europe grew by 24 percent from a year earlier to $699 billion. The loss equaled 12.5 percent of GM Europe's sales for the quarter, worse than 9 percent a year earlier. Its yearly loss in Europe more than doubled to $1.8 billion.

Worrisome to GM is its falling market share. GM's U.S. share fell from 19.2 percent in 2011 to 17.5 percent in 2012. It slipped from 18 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011 to 17.1 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012. Globally, GM gave up world sales leadership back to Toyota.

So what is ahead for GM in 2013? It has an important launch of an all-new Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pick-up trucks. With construction in the U.S. improving, that is a big opportunity for GM to earn big money with an all-new truck. The redesigned Chevrolet Impala will be released this quarter, the Buick Encore compact crossover recently hit the market and a redesigned Cadillac CTS will be released in the fall. The company is also amidst an emergency design fix of the Chevy Malibu mid-sized sedan, a car that critics have skewered for shortcomings while Ford, Honda and Nissan have all received laurels for the redesigns of their sedans this year.

GM management has been anxious for the government to sell off its stake in GM that resulted from the tax-payer bailout in 2009. President Obama has indicated that the Treasury will begin selling off its stake, with the likelihood to be out of GM by early 2014.

Barclays analyst Brian Johnson says that 2013 will be a challenging year for GM, but that "a sweet spot" may exist for GM in 2014 when it is free of government ownership and several important new products are new.

GM shares were trading flat after the open between $28 and $29 a share, well above its 52-week low of $18.72, but shy of its 52-week high of $30.68.

According to Laura Soave, CEO of Fiat USA, "the price is the price." The first Fiat, the 500, is priced between $15,500 and $17,500. The cars go on sale this month starting at the company's Los Angeles dealership. The company will gradually open 130 Fiat "studios" across the country by the end of the year.
Continue reading Fiat Goes for No-Haggle Pricing

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Natural Gas-Powered Taxis Gain Favor in Chicago, Other Cities

A Chicago taxi company will begin using a dozen Ford Transit Connect vans that run on natural gas instead of gasoline. Other cities are likely to follow.

Taxi Medallion Management, which is affiliated with Yellow Cab Chicago, bought the small Ford vans as part of its goal to cut its total emissions by 25%. They're due to be delivered in March.

Natural gas is less expensive than gasoline and burns cleaner, giving off up to 90% fewer smog-producing pollutants, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. It also produces 30% to 40% less greenhouse gas emissions, the EPA's website said. Almost 90% of it is produced in the U.S.
Continue reading Natural Gas-Powered Taxis Gain Favor in Chicago, Other Cities

Permalink | Email this | Comments

For Carmakers, 40 MPG Is the New 30

Toughened fuel economy standards and engineering know-how are making 40 miles per gallon on the highway the new 30.

It wasn't so long ago that boasting 30 mpg on the highway for small cars seemed like enough to paint a car "green." But many new vehicles are hitting 40 mpg and beyond without resorting to hybrid or electric power.

The new Ford Fiesta achieves 40 mpg on the highway without a hybrid powertrain. Joining the "40 mpg Club" for their performance on the highway are the new Ford Focus (40 mpg); Hyundai Elantra (40 mpg); Chevy Cruze Eco (42 mpg, pictured) and Chevy Sonic (40 mph).

And there are more on the way. Toyota will launch the Scion iQ later this year, which will get north of 40 mpg.
Continue reading For Carmakers, 40 MPG Is the New 30

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Nader Targets Pre-2003 Jeep Grand Cherokees as 'Modern Day Pintos'

Consumer activist Ralph Nader has called on Italian automaker Fiat to recall 1993-2004 Jeep Grand Cherokees made by Chrysler because of what he calls their vulnerability to catching fire in rear-end crashes.

Chrysler sold the bulk of its assets to Fiat in 2009.

U.S. safety regulators have been testing and considering a recall of 3 million vehicles, but so far the National Highway Highway Safety and Traffic Administration says the accidents associated with the vehicle do not warrant a recall. NHTSA has linked 22 fiery crashes and 14 deaths to the Grand Cherokee's fuel tank, which it has said is not out of the statistical norm.
Continue reading Nader Targets Pre-2003 Jeep Grand Cherokees as 'Modern Day Pintos'

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Toyota Recall Woes Continue: 1.7 Million Recalled for Fuel Leaks

Filed under: Consumer Ally, Travel, Investing
Toyota said it is recalling nearly 1.7 million vehicles around the world for defects that may cause fuel leakage. The recall effects a wide range of models, including the IS and GS Lexus luxury models in North America and the Avensis sedan and station wagon models in Europe. There are no reported accidents related to the defects, the company said. But it has received 77 complaints overseas, 75 in North America and more than 140 reports in Japan.
At the North American International Auto Show, concluding in Detroit today, Jan. 23, and at the Chicago Auto Show, held Feb. 11-20, budget vehicles are the stars.
Starting this month, Italian automaker Fiat is re-launching its brand in the U.S. after a 27-year absence. The first vehicle to hit 130 showrooms this year is the 500. It is a U.S. version of the popular Fiat Cinquecento, which debuted in Europe in 2007.
Continue reading Five Best New Cheap Cars (Under $20K) To Consider

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Why American Automakers Aren't Producing More 'Clean Diesel' Cars

German automakers like Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes, and Japanese automaker Mazda said this week at the North American International Auto Show that they are planning to offer more vehicles that run on "clean" diesel.

U.S. automakers, though, say they won't offer diesel engines in anything but heavy-duty work trucks because they don't see consumer demand, nor, they say, can they price their vehicles high enough to pay for diesel systems.
Continue reading Why American Automakers Aren't Producing More 'Clean Diesel' Cars

Permalink | Email this | Comments

U.S. Postal Service to Hike Rates in April

The U.S. Postal Service announced plans to hike postage rates on several different types of mail in April, but the cost of sending Mother's Day cards in May will stay the same.

The ruling was formalized by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Thursday. "Safety is our highest priority," Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said. "This new standard will help save lives and reduce injuries by requiring vehicles to have a safety system that keeps occupants in the vehicle in a rollover crash."
Continue reading USDOT: New Vehicles Must Protect Against Rollover Ejections

Permalink | Email this | Comments

10 Most and Least Expensive Vehicles to Insure

Filed under: Insurance, Economizer, Travel, Auto Insurance
If you want to shop for new vehicles based on insurance costs, you'll want to go to www.insure.com for a list of comparisons. For now, though, we will give you the list of the 10 least expensive and 10 most expensive models.

Based on the list, it would seem that family haulers, especially minivans, are the cheapest to insure--even better priced than family sedans.

It's no surprise, though, that the most expensive are the upper-echelon German and British cars.
Continue reading 10 Most and Least Expensive Vehicles to Insure

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Auto Show: Ford Explorer and Chevy Volt Win Top Awards

A panel of auto industry journalists named the 2011 Chevy Volt "North American Car of the Year," and the 2011 Ford Explorer [pictured] "North American Truck of the Year."
Unemployment still high. Home values still languishing. But some new-car buyers are able to pay cash for a new set of wheels.

The question is: Should you?

Car dealers have long reported that many older customers of certain brands, like Cadillac, Lincoln and Buick like to pay cash for their cars out of personal preference. They don't like paying interest or having monthly car payments.

Until a few years ago, many consumers paid cash for cars out of home equity lines of credit so they could deduct the interest.

Today, many would still like to pay cash, if they can, rather than carry more debt.
Continue reading What You Need to Know About Paying Cash for a New Vehicle

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Rent a Chevy Volt at Enterprise

If you're curious about the Chevy Volt extended-range electric vehicle but don't want to put up with the pressure from a dealership when you ask for a test drive, help is on the way.

Toyota scored 147 points in CR's 2011 Car Brand Perception Survey, while Ford received 144 points, a margin the magazine called a "statistical dead heat" given the margin of error in surveys. The magazine, which is widely read by car buyers, said Ford had made strides in safety, quality and value, three key parts of the survey.
Continue reading Ford 'In Dead Heat' With Toyota In Top Consumer Perception Survey

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Best New Vehicles for Resale Value

When shopping for a new vehicle, a buyer's attention usually goes to price, monthly payments, styling and the amount of rebate.

But one of the often overlooked factors is resale value. How much the vehicle is projected to be worth after three, four or five years is key if you are the kind of driver likely to sell or trade the vehicle in after a few years.
Power and Associates, the two leading arbiters of automotive quality. But CR said that the Dearborn, Mich., automaker stumbled with the redesign of its Ford Edge and Lincoln MKX crossovers, as well as the "MyTouch" electronic systems that are in both vehicles.

CR said that it will not be recommending the vehicles, or the MyTouch system, which is also planned for other Ford vehicles.
Continue reading Setback for Ford From Consumer Reports

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Coke Wraps Up Biggest Ever Social Media Campaign

Coca-Cola's largest social media project ever has come to an end. The company's three "happiness ambassadors" have completed a journey of more than 275,000 miles, 186 countries and 365 days in search of happiness.

The trio -- Tony Martin, 29, a Washington , D.C. , native now teaching kindergarten in Munich; Kelly Ferris, 23, a university student from Brussels; and Antonio Santiago, 24, a university student from Mexico City -- began on Jan. 1, 2010, armed with laptops, video cameras, smartphones and the like, and set off to visit 206 countries and territories where Coca-Cola is sold. They arrived back at Coke headquarters in Atlanta Dec. 29, 2010, just before the dawn of the New Year.
Continue reading Coke Wraps Up Biggest Ever Social Media Campaign

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Top Five Fuel Sippers to Buy With Gas Prices Passing $3

Gas prices passed $3 per gallon last week, the highest level in 26 months.

Though one popular survey of gas prices, the Lundberg Survey, said gas prices peaked at a national average of $2.99 per gallon, some other surveys have had the national average above $3, and, of course, it is already well above $3 in many parts of the country.
Continue reading Top Five Fuel Sippers to Buy With Gas Prices Passing $3

Permalink | Email this | Comments
