But some industries felt the pullback more than others. Allmenus.com, an online menu and food delivery site, tracked the tips that delivery people received from food orders through the website, and its recent survey revealed that delivery people were stiffed on tips during the recession.

According to Allmenus.com, the average pre-recession tip on a pizza delivery was approximately 11%, but during the worst of the recession, that percentage dropped to below 9%.

The Cornell University School of Hotel Administration teamed up with Payscale, Inc., a database of employee salaries, to evaluate the tip situation among hotel and restaurant workers. Many workers in the service industry were laid off or downsized to part-time when patronage began to slow, leaving many servers struggling to make ends meet. Payscale's survey concluded that on average, salaries (tips included) were reduced by more than 10% during the recession, and some workers even experienced a 50% decline in their tips, which for most workers in this industry comprises the bulk of their pay.
Continue reading Has America Reached the 'Tipping Point?' Although NRF estimates that Americans spent an average of $145.61 on gift cards, up 4% from 2009, and approximately 55.2% of adults asked for gift cards this past holiday season, many cards still go unused - approximately 10%. So what should you do with those unwanted gift cards?

Since the third Thursday in December is the most popular day for office holiday parties (the source of many unwanted gifts), it is only fitting that today also addresses the sticky issue of regifting, and reminds would-be shoppers to sift through their unopened presents for possible regifting options.

Of course, it is necessary for regifters to follow the important regifting etiquette rules like re-wrapping the gift and choosing an appropriate recipient, but the act of regifting remains an uncomfortable topic for some people, despite the fact that approximately 60% of Americans believe that the practice is becoming more acceptable, according to a 2007 survey conducted by market research firm, Money Management International.
Continue reading Today is National Regifting Day

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Black Friday: Store Hours

Filed under: Black Friday, Retail, Holiday Shopping
Stores are opening even earlier on Black Friday than usual this year -- Kmart, Sears, and Toys R Us are even maintaining hours on Thanksgiving Day. While cities like New York, Chicago, and San Francisco are lush with deals, there are far fewer options for the approximately 270 million Americans who live in cities with populations under 500,000 people.
But get ready for that to change, just in time for the Holidays.
Continue reading Holiday Shopping Alert: Daily Deals Are Not Just for Big Cities

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Batman's finances are finally revealed

GOTHAM CITY -- The burning question among all Gothamites will finally be revealed on Wednesday in Grant Morrison's final issue, No. 16, of "Batman and Robin" -- how can Batman afford his high-tech gear?

The masked vigilante is outfitted with only the most technologically-advanced equipment -- a memory fiber cape, high-gain microphones (to be the first on the scene), and a graphite-composite suit covered in Kevlar plating, not to mention his impressive utility belt with a host of cutting-edge weapons that would make even James Bond jealous. So how is it that Batman can spend his nights fighting crime into the wee hours of the morning and still manage to earn enough money to cover his pricey weaponry? He has a financial backer, of course.
Continue reading Batman's finances are finally revealed

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Election Day freebies: Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Chick-fil-A, and more

Filed under: Economizer, Fantastic Freebies, Deals, Investing
This Election Day, the national chains are not being as generous with voters' freebies as they were in 2008, and those that are seem to be offering them on an unofficial, individual basis. Perhaps because there remains some controversy over whether offering free items to people who voted is considered "buying a vote" and in violation of federal law, but the smaller number of voter freebies may just be a result of it being a midterm election year.

That said, there are still some freebies to be found. A few national chains are handing out free food and drinks to those who have voted, but the best bet is to check out local stores and restaurants. Since most outlets require an "I voted" sticker before they'll hand you a freebie, make sure to get one (or some other proof that you voted) at the polls.
Continue reading Election Day freebies: Starbucks, Krispy Kreme, Chick-fil-A, and more

Permalink | Email this | Comments

College tuition costs rising at a higher rate

Filed under: Student Loans, Family Money, Financial Aid, Economy
Budgets may be tight for most Americans, but that hasn't stopped colleges and universities from raising tuition. Public universities, which are typically perceived as a more affordable option, are really turning up the heat on students thanks to rising debts in both state and local governments.

As a result, the average tuition and fees for in-state public schools, over the past year, increased by 7.9% to $7,605, compared to an average 4.5% increase at private universities, with an average price of $27,293, according to the College Board's Trends in College Pricing 2010 report.
Continue reading College tuition costs rising at a higher rate

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Black Friday: Retailers begin to worry about safety

When you combine zealous bargain hunters and a short supply of discounted items, there are bound to be problems. Walmart spent approximately $2 million fighting a fine from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) over the safety of its stores.

Continue reading Black Friday: Retailers begin to worry about safety

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Black Friday: Toy store price wars begin

Filed under: Black Friday, Retail, Shopping

The fight for the best deals on toys has begun: First Toys R Us struck early by announcing its hot toy list in September and opening hundreds of pop-up stores in key retail locations across the country to make shopping for toys more convenient. The toy retailer also offers a layaway plan so customers can clinch the hottest toys before they sell out. Now Target has now entered the fray, announcing new price cuts on more than 1,000 toys, 250 of which are exclusive to Target.

While Target has not published an official "Hot Toys" List like Toys R Us and Kmart, Target's Merchandise Manager for toys and sporting goods, Casey Carl, emphasized in a statement that Target's toy discounts will encompass popular toys such as Nerf Stampede, Sing-a-ma-jigs, Zoobles, Kung Zhu hamsters, and HEXBUGS as well as classic toys that include LEGOs and Barbies.

Not to be outdone, Walmart retaliated in the toy price war by announcing toy discounts on items listed on their competitors' hot toys lists. Many popular toys are currently priced at $5, $10 and $15.

We're still six weeks away from Black Friday, with 10 weeks until Christmas and already retailers are discounting and price matching. If this is any indication of the season to come, it will be a very active season.
Standing 18-inches tall, the American Girl doll towers over her competition with more than 18 million dolls sold since the company was founded in 1986 and raking in $436 million in sales during 2009 alone.
In an effort to grab a larger share of the luxury market sales, Lord & Taylor is scouting out a new store in Westchester County, N.Y., home to its second-best performing store, but some critics say that expansion might not be the best marketing solution.

Location expansion will coincide with a marketing plan to promote brand awareness, but Lord & Taylor's marketing efforts are aimed at professional women aged 35-55, ignoring the potentially lucrative Generation Y demographic that not only spends more money on luxury items, according to a consumer marketing study conducted by Packaged Facts, but influences older shoppers.
Continue reading Lord & Taylor expands store locations, but its image remains dated

Permalink | Email this | Comments
