The inflated price tag for the event, which will take place at an estate in Rhinebeck, NY, might seem natural, given the added security that would be necessary for the daughter of a former President, but that's not the only thing that's driving up the price. As ABC News notes, Jenna Bush's wedding was estimated to have cost just $100,000. Experts are saying that the Clintons are paying more than that for the event location rental alone.

Other costs with big price tags include the food, the flowers, and all "normal" other expenses that are merely inflated because of the nature of the event -- which may be more about impressing the likes of Oprah and other celebs than it is about the politicos in attendance.

There's still time for the Clintons to cut back on these costs. WalletPop has some tips from some experts of our own -- a couple that cut $13,000 off the costs of their wedding after the groom got laid off. Read My Lay-off Wedding.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Wellpoint glitch exposes data to public

For the second time in two years, the health insurance company Wellpoint is having trouble keeping data private. The latest incident occurred in March, when a glitch in a computer program exposed data like credit card numbers, medical records from 470,000 customers. The glitch was revealed in a lawsuit by a customer who was able to access data by manipulating web addresses and call up sensitive information. The glitch was fixed in March after it was discovered but the company is now alerting customers.

The last Wellpoint data breach was in 2008, when the company lost a CD with the record of 75,000 people.
In the midst of that process, the Court has ruled against a decades-old handgun ban in Chicago, ruling it unconstitutional in a 5-4 decision on Monday.

The ruling against the ban doesn't necessarily make legally buying handguns easier now will it probably shift the gun-selling industry nationwide. States and municipalities are still trying to make buying guns harder, with limits on types of guns available for sale, waiting periods and other restrictions. Chicago's Mayor says he's considering measures like requiring training courses for gun owners.

People approached in the parking lot by the couple thought they were joking, but when the offers became more persistent, they called the police.
Now that manger is indeed suing her -- for saying that he was suing her. Not following? As an example of how work disputes can get blown out of proportion according to how much money is involved, the manager claims this is a defamation of his character and has added it to claims that Rivers cheated him out of money.
What do you think? As we told you the other day in our story about the controversy, Kilmer was in hot water over remarks he made to Rolling Stone magazine and other publications over the past seven years and when he applied for a permit to turn his 6,000-acre ranch into a bed and breakfast, the town turned on him.

Kilmer issues his apology in a public statement, and he immediately got his zoning permissions to convert his ranch.
Nevada went from 13.7% in April to to 14% in May, climbing to its highest point since the state started to record jobless data in 1976. Michigan, on the other hand, went from 14% own to 13.6%. Overall, 37 states has higher unemployment rates in May.
The two women made it through California's primary elections yesterday and will be running for office.

Whitman, 53, will be the Republican candidate for governor running against Attorney General Jerry Brown, while Fiorina, 55, will be running as a Republican for the Senate, against Barbara Boxer. As the first time two women are at the top of the ticket in that state, they can also serve as an example for women of a certain age and what they can achieve.
More than 25 million seniors were victims of fraud last year according to the Federal Trade Commission. Seniors become targets because they are easy to reach by phone, are often home during the day, often live along, and are often more willing to talk to strangers.

Permalink | Email this | Comments

30-Second Pitch: Would you give these people money?

Filed under: Careers, How to Save Money
Sure, everyone has a story, but more often than not, they also have a pitch -- a money-making idea, a personal plea, a pet cause or even just a message to get out there. In today's world of Twitter, iPhone video and instant Internet infamy, everyone with something to push should be ready at a moment's notice to get the word out.

That's why WalletPop has started to put people to the test. Our challenge: Can you pitch in 30 seconds or less? We've been gathering up some of the results so that you can judge for yourself. Who would you give money to or follow or even just find out more info about? See for yourself and then give us your feedback.
One ramped up approach this season is the integrated product placement that goes so far into the story that shows are weaving story lines around the items.

Of course, this is nothing new. Millions of people have been staring at Coke glasses in front of the judges on American Idol for years, and it was more than 25 years ago that E.T. parceled out Reese's Pieces on the big screen for big bucks. But this year's efforts, as detailed in the L.A. Times, go much further, creating side shows (pun intended) -- like Desperate Housewives extra scene involving Sprint and a Heroes subplot about a Palm Pre.
