The only thing cheaper than buying something used is trading and, with steep tuition costs, cheap is the only way to go for many students.

Now, it's becoming more common for students and savvy shoppers to trade online in order to broaden their swapping horizon to outside of the dorms. Those with some serious bargaining on the mind should consider exchanging through one of the following media:
Continue reading Students Trade Stuff Online to Save

Permalink | Email this | Comments

New Site at Odds With Students' Gambling Addiction

March Madness is winding down, and if you've played the brackets, this stat from the National Center for Responsible Gaming (NCRG) probably won't surprise you: 75% of college students have gambled in the last year.

Both legal and illegal gambling have high addiction rates. MentalHealthTreatment.net points out that gambling addicts rack up between $50,00 and $90,000 in debt every year. That's significantly more than most colleges' annual tuition. The NCRG is taking a stand against this addiction and on Tuesday, March 29, NCRG launched a new website, CollegeGambling.org, in an effort to curb gambling addiction among students.
Continue reading New Site at Odds With Students' Gambling Addiction

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Save Cash on Weekend Activities

Students tired of spending weekends at the same frat parties and local bars can take advantage of online deals to spice up their leisure time. Whether it be dining at a new venue or kayaking on the local lake, your computer can find you some serious savings. WalletPop compiled a list of some of the top cash-cutting hot spots:
Economical Pastimes
The process can be overwhelming as students contemplate cost, location and campus life, so here are six apps for under $2 to help find the perfect college fit:

For those who aren't entirely sure where to begin the search, download the American Colleges and Universities app. It provides a database of over 8,000 schools and gives very basic facts, including location, college website and contact information.

For a more in-depth view into a variety of schools, download the iCollege Guide app. Although this one features only 3,000 institutions, it provides many more details, including religious affiliation, student housing facts, financial aid information, estimated student expenses and much more.
Prices: Both applications: $1 each
Continue reading App Watch: Let iPhone Downloads Be Your Campus Guides

Permalink | Email this | Comments

iPad 2: Are Students Buying It?

Filed under: Technology, Financial Aid, iPhone, iPad
Friday marked the release of the iPad 2 and, according to Geek.com, while only 300,000 original iPads were sold within the first weekend of its release, half a million iPad 2s sold within the first day. However, despite the new features and faster speed, most students and recent graduates that WalletPop spoke to are not willing to fork over $500 for the new tech toy.

The lowest priced iPad 2 costs $500, but ranges up to $830 depending on size and WiFi vs. 3G capabilities. According to the Washington Post, textbooks range from $700 to $1,100 annually. That means that most students purchasing an iPad 2 will find themselves spending more on their new gadget than they do on books for an entire semester.
Continue reading iPad 2: Are Students Buying It?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Six Resume Secrets for College Grads

Filed under: Careers, Job Market, Financial Aid
With the job market still in recovery, competition for employment is fiercer than ever. To stand out from other applicants, this year's college graduates should begin with their resumes.

Here are some secrets on how to gain an edge from Peter Newfield, a former resume expert at Monster.com and AOL's Career Center, and current president of Career Resumes, a service dedicated to professional resume and cover letter writing.

1. When to Flaunt a GPA

For Newfield, 3.0 is the magic number. If you've got a 3.0 or higher in either an overall or major GPA, he says flaunt it. A solid GPA suggests a good work ethic and dedication. If it's below a 3.0, Newfield says that it's better to leave it off.
Continue reading Six Resume Secrets for College Grads

Permalink | Email this | Comments

App Watch: Six Ways to Save on Spring Break, for $3 or Less

Filed under: Technology, Financial Aid, iPhone
With spring break quickly approaching, it's almost time to ditch the books for the beach. But as the end of the academic gets closer, scholarships have been spent, loans run low and spending money's scarce. So here are six apps for $3 or less that will help you have a memorable spring break without going broke:

1. Trip Splitter: Finances tend to get messy when traveling in groups. Trip Splitter helps ensure that all spring breakers pay the same amount for every shared cost. The application allows up to six people, each of whom are assigned different colors and buttons so that financial entries are simple and clear. Then indicate the type of payment used (options include cash, credit, debit, check and gift) and email the financial particulars to the travelers as a reminder of what everyone owes.
It's actually not as far off as it might seem, and it's certainly time to start planning, especially if you want to get a break on the cost. Here's WalletPop's list of 10 of the hottest spring break locations, along with ways to stay on budget:

Stay Local

For those looking to spend as little as possible, remain in the states. Flights are cheaper within the U.S. and road trips are always an option. Vacationers don't have to travel far to have a memorable break:

1. Port Aransas: Every year, students from all over the South flock to Port Aransas, Texas to shake off the stress of school. With temperatures averaging in the 60s and 70s throughout March and April, the weather's perfect for renting a boat and fishing at what many think of as the fishing capital of Texas. Although it may be too chilly to swim, those who brave the beaches can relax on an 18-mile stretch of the world's longest barrier island.

Price breakdown:
-Split a house with friends, such as the Sea Parrot Beach Home, at $595 per night for five bedrooms.
-Go parasailing at $65 per person through Woody's Sports Center.
Simple spices and pantry items that frequent cupboards often do the trick. Nutrisystem's Chef Tony Mantuano, who was also featured on Bravo's hit show, Top Chef, offers his own tips on how to enhance foods' flavor without breaking the bank.

1. Italian Red Wine Vinegar: You've heard of infusing vodka, but did you know that you can add personal flavors to red wine vinegar? Sprinkle spices into a quality red wine and heat until simmering. Splash on vegetables or chicken for a taste that's high in flavor, but low in calories. Mantuano recommends combining fresh rosemary, thyme and parsley with the vinegar.
Price: $2 for one bottle of red wine vinegar
Continue reading Chef Tony Mantuano Shares Seven Tips for a Flavorful, Healthy Diet

Permalink | Email this | Comments

10 Tips to Help Save on Spring Break

With spring semester in full swing, it's time to start planning for spring break. For those who already spent the majority of their savings on textbooks and tuition, vacation is still an option. Take a look at WalletPop's top 10 tips for how to save on a mid-semester trip:

10. Consider Camping: Students are used to roughing it. Spending a week in a tent is nothing compared to messy dorm rooms and cafeteria food that college kids normally endure. Have a few friends pitch in for a multi-person tent and set up camp, literally. Look at websites such as Campingo and Trav.com's campsites to find pitching locations and costs.
Continue reading 10 Tips to Help Save on Spring Break

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Five Apps for Under $4 to Help Keep New Year's Resolutions

Filed under: Technology, Family Money, iPhone
With the start of a new year come new goals. Some strive to stay organized, while others hit the gym in hopes of a smaller waist size. Whatever your New Year's resolution may be, iTunes has plenty of apps on hand to help users start 2011 the right way.

Lose It
For those looking to drop a few pounds this year, download the weight loss app, Lose It. When the clock hits midnight on New Year's Eve, it marks the promise of new beginnings, resolutions and, for many, a strict weight loss plan. Before forking over the cash to step on the treadmill at any old gym, read WalletPop's tips on how to find the best gym deals to jump start a new year:
Before signing on for a full year of membership, test out the gym. Most companies offer free trials to potential customers. Bally Total Fitness, Gold's Gym, LA Fitness and Lifetime Fitness all offer seven-day guest passes. A week allows enough time to test out the club and classes before committing. "Try before you buy," said Dave Reiseman, Vice President of Communications at Gold's Gym International. "This allows you to make sure the amenities, classes and atmosphere are right for you."
For those who unwrapped the fuzzy sweater from Aunt Rita that doesn't even fit, or the third copy of World of Warcraft, it's time to head to the return aisle. Before spending an hour in the customer service line, check out WalletPop's updated list of return policies for some popular, holiday shopping spots.

Many stores have extended return windows or created rules that apply to gifts bought before Christmas and returned after Dec. 25.

Amazon
Policy: Most items shipped through December 31, 2010, may be returned until January 31, 2011, for a full refund. This policy allows a longer period than the company's typical 30 days. Amazon will cover the return shipping cost only if a mistake was made by Amazon.
Continue reading Holiday Return Policies: What You Need to Know

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Retailers for a Cause: Big Brands That Are Giving Back

'Tis the season to give and receive, and retailers are getting into the holiday spirit by making donations and promoting volunteer work. While some retailers like Ann Taylor, Kohl's and Williams-Sonoma are donating a portion of customer's shopping proceeds to a charity; others like Walmart, Macy's and REI are using their stores and websites to market charitable causes.

Here are some of the retailers who are giving a little back this holiday season.
Even Santa is feeling the pain of the recession this holiday season. To help relieve some of the strain on your wallet, consider making gifts for friends and family.

You can throw most of these presents together in a few hours, and none of them will set you back more than $20.
1. Stylish Wine Glasses
Price: $15
Time: 20 minutes

For many people, the holidays are about indulging in food, gifts and perhaps, a little wine. Make sure your gift recipients drink in style this year by making them beaded wine glasses. Simply string your choice of beads onto six to 12 inches of medium-gauge wire, depending on the size of the glass. Then wrap the beaded wire around the stem of the wine glass, twisting both ends of the wire into spirals, hearts or any customized shape.
