A Sprint official said on Monday that the company is moving to eventually have near-field communication (NFC) chips inside its phones so they can be waved at the cash register to buy, with the bill showing up on the customer's credit card statement and not on their cell phone bill. Starbucks is leading the way, with 3 million customers using its mobile payment service since it was introduced in January.
Continue reading Mobile Payment Apps Increasing, and So May Your Debt

Permalink | Email this | Comments

A Better Way to Manage Your Daily Deals?

Filed under: Retail, Economizer, How to Save Money
Ask anyone who's ever been faced with an in-box full of daily deals - Groupons or otherwise: A lot of these deals will be far off the mark. Do I need a pedicure or another half-off coupon for a restaurant I've never gone to and probably never will?

We recently wrote about how to save money on daily deal sites, but while knowing you'll cash in those golf lessons at some point is nice, what you'd really rather learn is how to find regular deals on things you buy regularly, like groceries and gas. Especially now that inflation fears are on the rise.

Offermatic, a new website that makes such daily deal offers more targeted, tries to lessen the load on your email in-box by only offering money back on things you already buy. By registering your credit or debit card, Offermatic gets a history of what you're buying and gives you offers based on your purchasing history, and puts rebates directly back on your card when you use its offers.
Continue reading A Better Way to Manage Your Daily Deals?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How Rising Gas Prices Will Affect Your Wallet Long-Term

With all of the turmoil over oil prices and gas prices creeping up daily, along with the Japan earthquake leading to a shortage of fuel-efficient cars, you'd think the world was ending and that Americans would soon be walking everywhere because they can't afford their gas-guzzling cars.

Gas prices are rising -- up 4 cents from a week ago to $3.58 per gallon as a national average, according to AAA. A year ago the national average for a gallon of regular gas was $2.80. The increase is enough to hit the average consumer hard in the wallet, but not as hard as in July 2008, when the national average hit $4.11 a gallon.
Continue reading How Rising Gas Prices Will Affect Your Wallet Long-Term

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gilbert Gottfried the Latest Person Fired for Tweets

Comedian Gilbert Gottfried's insensitive jokes on Twitter about the Japan earthquake and tsunami is among the latest Tweets to get someone fired, but it has a small silver lining: there's a job opening to be the voice of the Aflac duck.

Aflac started a national casting call Wednesday for applicants to send in a 30-second demo over the Internet, or apply in-person on March 31 or April 1 at six sites around the country. If you can sound like a duck while quacking "Aflac!" it's an easy way to make a six-figure income for working a few days a year.
Continue reading Gilbert Gottfried the Latest Person Fired for Tweets

Permalink | Email this | Comments

11 Ways to Resist Wasting Your Money on Groupon and Other Deal Sites

Filed under: Technology, Economizer, How to Save Money
Whether it's Groupon, LivingSocial, Redeemio or a host of other daily deal sites, those bargains for half off can be almost too enticing to pass up. Who wouldn't want half off a spa treatment or dinner at a restaurant they've been thinking of going to but never did because it was too expensive?

And that's a large part of the reason why Groupon has prospered and spawned dozens of copy-cat sites jumping into the white-hot deal space. People can't resist a deal. Trouble is, is it really a deal when it's for something you weren't likely to purchase in the first place? Most of the services offered are decidedly more luxury than necessity (unless you view those golf lessons as a necessity). One such site, CoupMe.com, has reported that 80% of new customers to businesses that offer the deals wouldn't have gone there without the coupon.

In this economy, the first lesson in how to be frugal should be how to resist the lure of offers on deal sites bombarding your inbox: Don't buy something if you don't need it. Yes, it's 50% off, but it's still money spent and might be money saved if you didn't have the deal to entice you.

Here are some other tips to keep you from wasting your money on deal sites, although "wasting" is subjective. What's an affordable deal for one person might be a luxury someone else can't afford.
Continue reading 11 Ways to Resist Wasting Your Money on Groupon and Other Deal Sites

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Gas Prices Down a Penny in Weekly Survey

Filed under: Economizer, How to Save Money, Investing
National gas prices slipped a penny from last week, although with prices bouncing around as much as a pinball machine, you might not actually see it in your neighborhood.

The Labor Department's Producer Price Index for February rose 1.6% -- the largest increase since June 2009. About 70% of the rise in food prices is from higher prices for fresh and dry vegetables, which jumped 48.7%.

Much of the increase in food costs can be attributed to rising crude oil prices, and climate change that creates erratic weather conditions and leads to smaller crop yields, said Will Boland, chief administrative officer at Sageworks, a company that follows trends in privately-held businesses.
Continue reading Food Prices Skyrocket: Your Restaurant Bill Will, Too

Permalink | Email this | Comments

For Online Shoppers, Best and Worst States to Live In

The state of Delaware brags that it was the first state admitted to the union ("It's good to be first"), and its bravado can only increase after an analysis by Extrabux declared it to be the best state to live in for online shoppers.
Online retailers are fighting to avoid having to pay sales taxes where they aren't physically present or where they have only distribution centers, as Amazon is doing in Tennessee, because they and sites such as Extrabux could lose a lot of money if such tax laws go into effect. Amazon claims its distribution centers aren't retail sites but simply shipping points.
Continue reading For Online Shoppers, Best and Worst States to Live In

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Boycott Gasoline? Or, "Send a message to Big Oil by boycotting gasoline for a day."

But like every urban legend, it sounds good until you look at the details and realize it's the same misinformation that has been passed around for years. There are plenty of legitimate ways to save on gas, but these myths won't do it.

The gas boycott that has been called for in some form of a chain letter since 1999 is based on a flawed premise. The "gas out" doesn't ask people to use less gas, only to change their date of purchase and buy it a day earlier or later than they normally would, according to a Snopes.com analysis of the rumor.
Continue reading Boycott Gasoline? Dailakis eventually figured out that time was money, and the extra $8 to ride the Long Island Rail Road was worth the cost.

"This was no way to live," says Dailakis, right, of his long commute 10 years ago when he arrived in New York from Australia. Since then, the comedian has earned enough money to change his poor travel and eating habits, and has vowed to spend the extra money when needed when it comes to his health or time.
Continue reading You Know You're Too Frugal When...

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Biggest Drugstore Markups: Which Products You're Paying More For

Filed under: Health Care, Family Money, How to Save Money
Whether you're looking for heartburn relief, aspirin, condoms, vitamins or even shampoo and lipstick, shopping at a drugstore can be daunting. There are so many choices that the easiest option can be buying a brand you know.

But drugstore markups can lead to serious overspending. At the very least, you could be overpaying for a drug that can be found much cheaper in a generic version. After all, the Food and Drug Administration requires generic medications to have the same active ingredients as the patented medications they replace, so you're buying the same product, but you aren't paying extra for the fancy branding and packaging.

Outside of prescription drugs, which items at a drugstore are you likely to be charged more for?
Continue reading Biggest Drugstore Markups: Which Products You're Paying More For

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Unique Ways Kids Can Earn Money

A lemonade stand may be one of the most recognized ways young kids earn money before they're old enough to take on a real job, but there are plenty more. From starting a business with friends to sell homemade items, to tutoring or selling puppies, there are many more ways for kids to make money than the traditional methods of mowing the lawn and doing chores.

An allowance for doing household chores is a good start to teaching children about money, and setting up a bank account so they can save 20% to 40% of their income will help teach them financial skills, said Daniel Penrod, a senior industry analyst at the California Credit Union League, which represents more than 400 credit unions with 10 million members.

"The piggy bank at home is nice, but it's too accessible," Penrod said. "It's too easy to get to it and spend it frivolously."
Continue reading Unique Ways Kids Can Earn Money

Permalink | Email this | Comments

College Financial Aid: Admissions Director's Five Tips for Getting It

Filed under: Student Loans, Family Money, Financial Aid
Like many major purchases, the best tip for paying for college is simple but difficult: Start saving early -- like during infancy.

Contributing to a college savings plan early will lead to more money saved and more tax benefits. But even with such foresight, it still may only cover a third of the cost, requiring students to annually file a FAFSA form so they can try to get financial aid from their college.

The aid can come in the form of scholarships, grants and loans, and FAFSA -- the Free Application for Federal Student Aid -- helps colleges determine how much aid to give students. But there are steps that students can take, after their FAFSA form is submitted, to help them get the best financial aid package they can.

WalletPop discussed this with Jay Murray, director of admissions at Post University in Waterbury, Conn.; it has 800 undergraduate students and a total enrollment of 4,000 when online students are added. Murray has worked as a financial aid officer at three different colleges during the past 15 years.
Continue reading College Financial Aid: Admissions Director's Five Tips for Getting It

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Is Borders' Bankruptcy the End of Brick and Mortar Stores?

Borders' recent bankruptcy filing is just the latest in a string of signs the Internet, e-books, iPad and other technology are pulling shoppers away from brick and mortar stores, and these signs have retail observers wondering if the demise of physical stores is just getting started.

Stores that only a few years ago were thought to be stalwarts of the shopping world are giving way to the Internet. Businesses that specialize in music, movies, office supplies and even tools are moving more to the Internet, where the costs are lower and where its easier to display everything. Just look at a website like Amazon.com. It's the Sears Roebuck catalog of the 21st Century, selling everything from books to clothes to power tools.

Other retailers are on the brink of bankruptcy this year, although not all because they're losing business to the Internet. What will the retail landscape look like in 10 years, and is the Borders bankruptcy the beginning of the end for brick and mortar stores? WalletPop talked with retail experts and business owners for their ideas on the future of physical stores.
Continue reading Is Borders' Bankruptcy the End of Brick and Mortar Stores?

Permalink | Email this | Comments

How to Save on Gas as Prices at the Pump Climb

Filed under: Economizer, Travel, How to Save Money
The price of gas is going up so fast that even government reports can't keep up with it. A few days after the federal Energy Information Administration said in its weekly report that the average price of regular gas in the U.S. is $3.19 per gallon -- marking the highest average February price since the government started keeping track in 1990 -- the AAA fuel gauge report on Thursday put the national average at $3.22. The price rose three cents per gallon in a day.

I live in California, which has some of the most expensive gas in the country, and we have seen regular for $3.65 a gallon. Blame the turmoil in the Mideast.
Whatever the cost, there are ways to save on gas and find the best prices. WalletPop recently covered some tried and true methods to save at the pump -- shopping around, filling up at midday on a Tuesday, getting regular tuneups, slowing down, and, of course, steering clear of pricey premium gas. Here are some more ways you can keep your quick drive to the store or the annual family road trip from costing you a small fortune:
Continue reading How to Save on Gas as Prices at the Pump Climb

Permalink | Email this | Comments

ScoreBig.com Aims to do for Event Tickets What Priceline Did for Hotels

Filed under: Technology, Economizer, Family Money, How to Save Money
With the average price of a seat at a professional sporting event at $50, taking a family of four to a hockey, basketball or other game can be an expensive outing and can quickly add up to $300 when food, drinks and transportation are added.

ScoreBig.com, a ticketing website based in Los Angeles, aims to lessen that cost -- at least the ticket part of it -- by selling tickets that it says are 10% to 70% off face value to customers who set the price they want to pay and then hope it's accepted. It works like Priceline.com, the popular travel site where shoppers name their price and then wait a few minutes to see if it was accepted.
"We as an industry have outpriced the casual fan," said Adam Kanner, CEO of ScoreBig, in an interview with WalletPop.
Continue reading ScoreBig.com Aims to do for Event Tickets What Priceline Did for Hotels

Permalink | Email this | Comments

7-Eleven Wants Your Fast-Food Dollars

Hanging out at the local 7-Eleven may not be just for teens anymore.

Less than two months after the start of the student financial aid program's filing period, FAFSA deadlines loom. There are various federal and state deadlines, and colleges may have earlier deadlines, so students are advised to check with the colleges that they're applying to for the 2011-12 school year.
Continue reading State FAFSA Deadlines Coming for College-Bound Students

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Biggest Grocery Store Markups: The Worst Deals in the Aisles

With food prices expected to increase by 3% to 5% this year, grocery stores are going to be forced to pass some of the extra cost on to shoppers.

But what accounts for some of the highest markups in the grocery store aisles now? Perishables. Foods that easily spoil and must be thrown away before they go bad cut deeply into a grocery store's 2.5% profit margin, prompting stores to raise prices, says Timothy Richards, a professor of agribusiness at the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University. "They've got to have high margins [for these foods] just because of the loss that supermarkets have."
Besides perishables, what are the most overpriced products you'll find in a grocery store? To get the dish, WalletPop spoke with retail experts to find out which grocery store items we're overpaying for the most and how we can save on them.
Continue reading Biggest Grocery Store Markups: The Worst Deals in the Aisles

Permalink | Email this | Comments

Drive Down the Price of an E-Book by Joining the Crowd

Or you could just be pre-ordering Godin's newest book and still make him rich.

Either way, it's an interesting look into how people are manipulated into buying something if they can get a lower price as a group, and should make the Freakonomics bloggers happy.
Continue reading Drive Down the Price of an E-Book by Joining the Crowd

Permalink | Email this | Comments
