Pennsylvania is closely tied to alcohol. In the Revolutionary War, it supplied alcohol to the Continental army, and after independence, it became a mecca for distillers across the country. Now, some Keystone state microdistillers are returning to those roots, with some modern flourishes as well.

How New York Lifted the Microdistillery Industry's Spirits

Following on the success of a 1976 farm-winery law that paved the way for a strong winery industry, the state legislature created a distilling permit in 2002 and expanded it in 2007. New York now has 18 microdistilleries that are pumping new life into the local economy.
