Mailing a Letter to Cost a Penny More Next Year

It'll cost a penny more to mail a letter next year. The cash-strapped U.S. Postal Service announced Tuesday that it will increase postage rates on Jan. 22, including a one-cent increase in the cost of first-class mail, to 45 cents.

The U.S. Postal Service is considering closing around 2,000 post offices across the country this year. This could put at least 10,000 government employees out of work. A short-term win as part of deficit reduction could be a long-term loss.
