Why Airlines Hiked Fares Over the Weekend

Airlines are tossing consumers aside and grabbing the benefit of lower federal taxes on travel tickets. By Saturday night, nearly all the major U.S. airlines had raised fares to offset taxes that expired the night before.

Southwest Remains No. 1 for Airline Customer Service

The American Customer Satisfaction Index's annual report on airlines showed Southwest still on top of the rankings, and far ahead of No. 2 Continental. Southwest even improved its score, a rare bright spot in an industry that came in last overall in customer satisfaction among those the ACSI rates.

Southwest Posts Earnings of 15 Cents Per Share

Southwest Airlines (LUV) reported second-quarter earnings of 15 cents per diluted share, up from 12 cents per diluted share in the second quarter of 2009. Operating revenue gained 21% to $3.2 billion, driven by a 19% increase in the average passenger fare, the company said in a statement. Net income was $112 million, up from $91 million in the year-ago quarter.
