As rapid economic growth and a population boom take place in the developing world, oil will play an increasingly vital role, no matter what its drawbacks. That puts the likes of Schlumberger, Weatherford and Baker Hughes in a sweet spot.
The allegations concern contract payments Schlumberger made several years ago to a consulting firm, Zonic Invest, which has ties to Yemen's government.
Schlumberger reported Friday morning its income from continuing operations, excluding charges, rose to $818 million, or 68 cents a share, from $613 million or 51 cents per share in the year-ago period. Earnings met Wall Street estimates.
Still in the thick of earnings season, investors are keeping a close eye on financial reports from some of the nation's biggest corporations. A few stocks to watch during today's trading session include Microsoft, Sears and Xerox.
Beyond bringing Schlumberger $491 million in revenues and a strong customer base, the real allure is Geoservice's technology. The company is a leader in so-called "mud-logging," which allows for real-time data analysis of deep-sea drilling and can help avoid hazards.
Dealmaking in the energy sector has been red-hot lately, and now Schlumberger is getting into the action. The oil services giant agreed to buy Smith International for $11 billion, but the all-stock deal could hit serious antitrust challenges along the way.
