With nearly 400,000 new titles published each year, serious writers need a way to stand out. An award is one way to do that. The Story Prize for short stories, an Oscar for screenwriting and the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize for fiction may be at the top of the list, but literary awards of any sort make you stand out.
The books that won the coveted Pulitzer Prize this afternoon included an eclectic mix of expected winners and one surprising newcomer. First-time novelist, Paul Harding, took the prize in the fiction category for Tinkers.
Last year was tough for the Post's reputation, much to the chagrin of Executive Editor Marcus Brauchli (pictured, center). But winning four Pulitzer Prizes should do a lot to change that. The Enquirer's reputation remains unchanged.
