November Sales Put Retailers in a Merry Mood

Major retailers got an early Christmas present this year: Better-than expected November sales. The nation's largest merchants posted 6% sales growth in November compared to 2009, far ahead of the 3% to 4% growth forecast by most analysts. But holiday shoppers are expected to continue their bargain hunting in December.

Black Friday Weekend Sales Hit $45 Billion

Shoppers spent a total of $45 billion over the Black Friday weekend, with the average shopper raising their spending by 6.4%. A total of 212 million shoppers visited stores and websites over the weekend, compared with 195 million last year, the National Retail Federation said. The average shopper spent $365.34, compared with $343.31 a year earlier.
