Andrews Sykes’ heaters hired for Rihanna’s Westfield Stratford City Christmas gig

Andrews Sykes’ heaters were specified to keep A-lister Rihanna warm, on and off stage, at her gig for 20,000 fans, during which she switched on the Christmas lights at Westfield Stratford City this December.

As a cold snap hit the UK, event organisers became concerned that near freezing temperatures on the large, open stage may prevent Rihanna from performing. Andrews Sykes was called upon to devise a heating strategy that would raise temperatures and ensure the performance and light switching on ceremony could progress as planned.

Andrews Sykes provided two Aurora FH185 units for the stage, both indirect oil fired heaters and in addition 12, DE25 electric fan heaters (2.8kW) for the backstage area and portacabins.

The 185kW Aurora units were specified due to their slimline design - ideal for areas when space is at a premium, portability is key and high capacity required. The warm, clean, dry air supply raised the temperature on stage from around 2.5°C to 20°C.

Andrews Sykes also supplied installation, fuel and generators (via a third party): power supplies were already stretched to capacity due to the strain of existing lighting, amplifier and other production equipment. Andrews Sykes also provided an engineer to be on site for the entire day of the event.

Steve Reeve, Director at Andrews Sykes said: “It is difficult to retain heat in a situation where the stage is effectively open to the elements but the entire concert could have been in jeopardy had a heating solution not been found. As soon as we received the call, we suggested a site visit which enabled us to judge the best strategy for this often complicated type of environment and situation.

“With Rihanna’s 777 tour just kicking off, it was essential to keep the star warm and protect her voice. In the crossfire of our Aurora units, Rihanna would have certainly not felt the effects of the British winter.”
