After Market: EPA's Gas Blend Plan Moves Stocks; New Highs for Dow, S&P

×

An EPA rule change rippled through Wall Street Friday, and it could make a difference when you go to fill your gas tank. Meanwhile it was another day, another record for both the Dow Industrials and the S&P 500. The Dow (^DJI) rallied 85 points Friday, the S&P 500 (^GPSC) rose 7, and the Nasdaq (^IXIC) gained 13 points.

All of the major averages posted solid gains for the week –- the sixth straight weekly advances for the Dow and S&P.

The Environmental Protection Agency wants to scale back the target amounts of ethanol and biodiesel products that must be blended into gasoline. It says the old target may be impossible to meet. That's bad news for big agricultural companies such as Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). Its shares fell more than 3 percent. But gasoline refiners could benefit. Valero (VLO) edged higher. And consumers could benefit too: A smaller level of blended gas could mean prices at the pump edge lower.

Exxon (XOM) rose 2 percent on word that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A) bought a big stake in the oil giant.

Shares of Sony (SNE) were a bit lower even though its PlayStation 4 video game console opened to long lines at stores across the country. The $399 video game console is Sony's first new gaming system in seven years, and it's considered critical to Sony's future. Rival Microsoft (MSFT) launches its new Xbox next week.

Vanda Pharmaceuticals (VNDA) jumped 12 percent after an FDA panel recommended approval of the company's drug to help blind people regulate their internal body clocks. The stock has more than doubled in value this week.

Pandora (P) rose 7 percent, LinkedIn (LNKD) gained 4 percent and Yelp (YELP) rose 5 percent on positive brokerage firm comments for all three Internet plays.

And investors in another Internet IPO hit the jackpot. Shares of Zulily soared 71 percent from their $22 offering price. The company offers discounted flash sales of items designed for kids and their moms.

We loose mileage on ethanol. We pay more for meat at the grocery store because of ethanol. The taxpayers pay for the government mandates to the ethanol producers. Our one resource that we can ill afford to watch go down the drain is used in tremendous amounts to make ethanol---water. We now have more oil being brought out of the ground in America than any other time in history. Make ethanol stand on it's own without mandates if ethanol is a good product the refiners with continue to use if it's cost effective to do so.

Ethanol has been an incredible boondoogle. The boating and small engine industry has struggled with this garbage for years. Less mileage, more pollution and higher prices at both the gas pump and the supermarket. Go back to growing corn to actually feed some people at reasonable prices, Archer Daniels Midland and Conagra! We used to grow the world's food, and now cereal is $6 a box?

and the ethanol destroys the engine seals etc and truly destroys gas mowers etc creates sludge in the gas tanks--
WHO PAYS FOR THE DOCUMENTED DAMAGES OF ETHANOL ?

dduuuuuuuuuuuuuh WE DO.

and why is this CONTINUING ?

I get 3-4 more miles per gallon with straight gas in my car. It costs more to make ethanol than gas, so where is the savings?

How does a Fed agency make law by passing Congress?
BTW, ethanol ruins engines and that is a fact.

I agree! What a waste of resources. More time, money and energy is spent on the ill effects of "E" fuel than any benefit it has. Leave gasohol in the 70's.

EVERY DAMN TIME they change the blends, the engine goes through a period of ADJUSTMENT resulting in crappy mileage---WHATEVER THEY DID NOW has it very UPSET and a prolonged adjustment--mileage and speed suK....or could IT BE that the sludge has reached an UNACCEPTABLE LEVEL IN THE GAS TANK ,valves and the seals are DESTROYED ???
sure let's check it out ! let's "drop" the tank and flush it out and see what's in it ! PsOS.

thanks envirOWHACKOS and of course WE PAY FOR THIS.
