On the heels of a major recall of popular Kraft American cheese, one of the biggest sellers of Parmesan cheese in the U.S. is recalling more than 3,500 jars of grated cheese over concerns it could be contaminated with salmonella, the Food and Drug Administration said.

The FDA said it found the problem during routine testing and alerted 4C Foods Corp. As a result, 4C issued a recall of 6-ounce glass jars of its 4C Grated Cheese HomeStyle Parmesan. The jars have a UPC of 0-41387-32790-8. The jars have "best by" dates of July 21 and July 22, 2016.

The FDA said the cheese was shipped to stores in the Midwest on July 24. At this point, the recall is limited to Iowa, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin.

Salmonella can cause serious gastrointestinal problems. For young children, the elderly and those who have impaired immune systems, the organism can cause infections that can be fatal, the FDA said, adding that no associated illnesses have been reported so far.

The Parmesan recall follows the Kraft American cheese recall, which was announced as the Labor Day weekend got underway. Kraft blamed a supplier for not storing food at a proper temperature, creating the possibility the cheese could go bad prematurely.

Cheese is difficult to test. The cheese has natural microbes that create a growth when plated. Newer techniques have allowed the government to identify the individual species. Odds are this cheese contaminated from equipment that was not cleaned frequently enough.
