10 Foods to Avoid While FDA Inspections Are Shut Down

When the government shuts down, only "essential" employees stay on the job. Apparently, that list does not include roughly half of the Food and Drug Administration. And because all of those employees have been furloughed until Congress passes a continuing budget resolution, the FDA has suspended food safety inspections.

We citizens, of course, still need to eat -- which creates a potentially risky situation for all of us.
Though local and state agencies may still be on the job, there are millions of tons of food every day that enter the country for consumption. Even when the FDA is at full strength, problems slip through the cracks.

In fact, the Center for Science in the Public Interest recently came out with a report on "Ten Riskiest Foods Regulated by the U.S. FDA." The list was compiled using statistics from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and analyzes food outbreaks and reports of illness between 1990 and 2006.

During that time, the following 10 foods -- regulated by the FDA and in ascending order -- were the most oft cited as causing illness.

It stands to reason that, with inspections shut down, consumers might be at an even higher risk until Congress gets its act together.

Though taken as a whole, consumers still aren't very likely to be victims of food poising, those with small children or compromised immune systems should be especially careful while the FDA's inspections are shut down, and be sure to cook their food thoroughly.

Two of my grandparents lived well into their 70s. One was poor and died of Alziemers; the other was rich and died of cancer (both of their spouses died ealier from heart attacks). They grew up before we used antibiotics and other drugs to fuel the growth of the animals we ate. They didn't have floridated water or antibiotic soaps. They lived "natural" lives and died when their time ran out.. Today, we are focused on extending life, not the quality of life. My wife's grandmother lived to be 1001. She lived with her husband on a farm. Thay ate well and lived well, without all the "live forever" stuff we get today.

I am not rich or famous. I know that 100 years from now, nobody will know that I ever lived, nor will they care. They may find me on Ancestry.com, but so what? Rhey will never have known me.

I am 68 years old and my health is a question mark. So what if I die tomorrow? A few of my surviving relatives will miss me, but others will seldom think of me again. So what? I cannot postphone or eliminate the inevitable, so I will go when it's my time. Keep your drugs, and leave our animals alone. I know the dinsaurs are not coming back, but leave our elephants and bears alone.

If they are not needed why are they there in the firstplace.Obama himself is the one that uncovered all this goverment waste lay them off permanently no backpay unemploment only like the real world no corrupt seniority which has caused all kinds of industries to fail it is not condusive to productivity let our grandkids spend thier own money.Obama needs to look for a job because he ain't doing the one He's pretending to do.

Hello, Karen

Using manure from animals who are given antibiotics contributes to superbugs in the vegetables and berries. Elimination of antibiotics across the board for all animals, that is cows, pigs, and chickens would lessen the likelihood of these superbugs showing up in their fecal material. However until that happens fruits and vegetables can be WASHED WELL, not rinsed off, using soap or hydrogen peroxide.
Pasteurization of ALL eggs eliminates bacteria (salmonella) on the eggs greatly reducing the likelihood of infection.
Since these infections are occuring even when the FDA is on the job, we need to better regulate the food industry until these problems can be brought under control. To expect any of these agricultural corporations to put our health first is totally ridiculous.
