It has the same appearance and similar text, but a few elements are misplaced, the language a bit awkward. If you notice these inconsistencies, you're lucky, because you've identified a website spoof, thereby dodging a scam.

This week brought some good news for consumers and legit companies on this front. FreeCreditReport.com, a part of ConsumerInfo.com, Inc, which is owned by Experian (EXPN) company, won a complaint that grants it ownership of over a thousand Internet addresses very similar to FreeCreditReport.com.
Continue reading FreeCreditReport.com wins lawsuit against typosquatters

FreeCreditReport.com wins lawsuit against typosquatters originally appeared on DailyFinance on Sun, 15 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. The moves will cost the company millions, but will allow it to refocus on its core business, the cruiser bike market.

Buell represented the company's foremost attempt to break out of the cruiser mold. Harley bought the name and product of inventor Erik Buell in 2003 with the hope of breaking into new markets, including sport (high performance) and standard bikes. However, a lack of acceptance by the company's dealer network and inadequate investment in building the brand kept Buell from finding any real traction. According to CFO John Olin, the Buell brand is not accounted for separately on the Harley-Davidson books, and therefore the company has chosen to kill it rather than sell it off. Another explanation might be that the brand has little to no value.
Continue reading Harley-Davidson to shut down Buell, MV Augusta Brands, finally

Harley-Davidson to shut down Buell, MV Augusta Brands, finally originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 15 Oct 2009 17:30:00 EST. Last year, the Chinese government clamped down on travel to Macau from nearby Guangdong province, ostensibly to fight gambling addiction, resulting in a drop in revenue. But rolling the dice on this industry does not appear to be a winning strategy, a new study from the Nelson A. Rockefeller Institute shows.

Why not? This past year has seen gaming revenue shortfalls, some tied to the recession and some part of long-term trends. More specifically, gaming revenue declined 2.6 percent nationally, with 28 of 42 states showing losses. The biggest losers were Oregon (-15.2 percent), Illinois (-14.6 percent) and Nevada (-12.5 percent).
The introduction of the auto made those obsolete. Now the state is in frenzied pursuit of federal stimulus money to return rail service to the state.

The question is, will we use it? Ohio hired Amtrak to study the feasibility of its Quick Start plan, an eight-train-a-day passenger service connecting Cincinnati, Dayton, Columbus, and Cleveland and using existing rails at modest speeds. Last week, Amtrak unveiled its findings, including an estimate that 478,000 riders a year would use the service, spending $12 million for the privilege. The full 225-mile route, from the Ohio River to Lake Erie, is projected to take around six hours, versus a drive time of four hours and 50 minutes on Greyhound. Ticket price estimates, based on those of the Chicago-St. Louis train, range from $23 to $60.
Continue reading Great Lakes Journal: $500 million worth of rail fever

Great Lakes Journal: $500 million worth of rail fever originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 28 Sep 2009 12:00:00 EST. McWilliams' new book Just Food could be taken as an attack on three movements; eating locally, fighting genetically modified crops, and using organic farming practices. He argues that these three could be responsible for more, not less, damage to the environment.

Heresy? Perhaps. However, the author is neither a knee-jerk conservative nor one who bases his conclusions on hearsay. Just Food is a carefully researched, thoughtful presentation about what happens when our preconceptions collide with valid research. But lest you think that McWilliams is a toady of the status quo, he also includes a scathing take on the land meat industry as an ecological and economic nightmare, while expressing a surprising amount of hope for aquaculture.

Continue reading Can eating locally, organically hurt the environment? While this year has been rife with the announcement of new devices to compete with Amazon's (AMZN) Kindle, none have the potential of the Tablet to turn the entire market upside down. For two reasons; the Tablet promises a quantum leap forward in customer experience over e-readers, and can tap into the enormous iTunes merchandising system.
Continue reading Apple Tablet could be the real Kindle killer

Apple Tablet could be the real Kindle killer originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 14 Sep 2009 16:30:00 EST. At the center of this is eBay (EBAY), which reported $8.5 billion sales in 2008 and served as the marketplace for almost $60 billion in transactions.

I spoke with eBay's Brian Bieron, Senior Director, Federal Government Relations and Global Public Policy, about the company's position on the subject.

Continue reading EBay: Internet sales tax hurts businesses

EBay: Internet sales tax hurts businesses originally appeared on DailyFinance on Tue, 08 Sep 2009 17:30:00 EST. After all, squeezing out an additional $184 million in a state of only 1.8 million residents calls for serious accounting magic.

They may have found a first step. According to the West Virginia Gazette, the state has OK'd a contract with Chrysler Financial Services to provide 115 used, previously-leased Chryslers, Jeeps and Dodges to add to its fleet, thereby saving it $800,000 over the price of buying them new.
Continue reading West Virginia's plan to save money: Buy used cars

West Virginia's plan to save money: Buy used cars originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 20 Aug 2009 11:30:00 EST. Now, however, the Coinstar (CSTR)-owned firm is elbowing its way into the video gaming world. Last week, the retailer premiered its first game rental kiosk in Reno, Nev. The companies new machines will allow users to borrow Nintendo, Wii, PS 2/3 and Xbox games for only $2 a night.

The threat to game producers here isn't much different than that perceived by the major movie companies. The top-selling game last week was Wii Sports Resort, with almost a quarter of a million copies. At $50 apiece, the software grossed over $12 million in those seven days. If the same games were available via a Redbox kiosk for $2 per night, how much would this cannibalize sales?
Continue reading Redbox enters the game market - Will it lead to Doom?

Redbox enters the game market - Will it lead to Doom? originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 17 Aug 2009 15:00:00 EST. To help fill the crater, the Governor and legislature just rammed through a bill to allow slot machines at seven horse tracks, despite the long history of Ohioans voting down gambling proposals. (Governor Strickland made sure this proposal never saw a ballot.) To balance Ohio's new two-year, $50.5 billion budget, the state projects revenue from these slots of $933 million per year.

The opposition to this measure, LetOhioVote.org, has been vocal about its position but resolutely mute about the source of its funding. Tellingly, the opposition to an upcoming casino bill is backed by MTR Gaming Group (MNTG), which owns racinos -- race tracks which have casinos -- in Pennsylvania and West Virginia and wants Ohioans to continue crossing the Ohio River to gamble.
Continue reading Great Lakes Journal: Ohio is broke, but gambling is not the answer

Great Lakes Journal: Ohio is broke, but gambling is not the answer originally appeared on DailyFinance on Wed, 12 Aug 2009 15:00:00 EST. Not long afterward, it sent out emails with an attached spreadsheet that contained contact details for the conference's 1,408 attendees.

As many of McAfee's competitors chuckled over its major breach of confidentiality, the company scrambled, quickly placing the blame on human error and discounting the usefulness of the information. However, one attendee told Computerworld that the list included the entire registration database, down to employment details and menu choices for the conference banquet. Any hackers who wanted to know if their foes preferred steak or chicken would likely find this list highly illuminating.
Continue reading McAfee security experts make security blunder

McAfee security experts make security blunder originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 30 Jul 2009 14:40:00 EST. Armstrong and his team will race in next year's Tour de France, which he won seven times before retiring temporarily in 2005. The Tour ends Sunday; he is expected to finish third this year.

How does cycling-team sponsorship make sense for Radio Shack, when it proved a disaster in the past for the U.S. Postal Service? The only bike race that receives more than cursory coverage is the Tour de France, and it runs on Versus, Comcast's small blood-sports cable network. This year's real-time Tour coverage -- airing in the a.m. in the U.S., due to the time difference -- has drawn not quite half a million viewers. And that's up 77 percent over last summer's Tour, when Armstrong did not compete. Nielsen Media Research reports that 30 million viewers have tuned in for at least a moment during this year's race.
Continue reading Next year in France! A few days ago, bookseller Barnes & Noble (BKS) announced a deal with Plastic Logic to supply a Kindle-like reader. B&N's catalog of 700,000 titles, twice that available for the Kindle, should be a major attraction for consumers, as should the new device's cell-network based Internet connectivity, which will be provided through AT&T (T).

Barnes & Noble's device will apparently work much like the Kindle, which uses the Sprint network. Users will be able to download reading material anywhere within the AT&T network, including its Wi-Fi network in locations such as Starbucks (SBUX). Amazon bundles the cost of the Sprint (S) connectivity into the price of the device and books purchased. It seems likely that B&N will do the same.
Continue reading Barnes and Noble's new e-reader sets its sights on Amazon's Kindle

Barnes and Noble's new e-reader sets its sights on Amazon's Kindle originally appeared on DailyFinance on Wed, 22 Jul 2009 13:30:00 EST. The famous brand was forged in one of the most tumultuous periods in Russia's history, yet the company's eponymous founders struggled with many of the same business problems that financial analysts see today.

Pyotr Smirnov, founder of the empire, was born into serfdom in 1831, and was, effectively, the property of the Skripitsyn family. Fortunately for Smirnov, however, his family was ambitious, and the success of an uncle who made enough money to buy his own freedom inspired a young Pyotr to move to Moscow and pursue his own liberation.
Continue reading Review: The King of Vodka by Linda Himelstein

Review: The King of Vodka by Linda Himelstein originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 20 Jul 2009 18:20:00 EST.
