For those who are unfamiliar with Tesla Motors, the Roadster is the Ferrari of the electric-vehicle world, a high-performance two-seater with more sex appeal than Mae West. How ironic, then, that my friend pines for her old Honda Insight, a dinky little hybrid that has been a commercial failure but remains a cult favorite among the green car set. Why would any sane, hedonistic California resident wish their Ferrari were a Chevy Chevette?

Because the Insight had a wonderful feature that told her how efficiently she was driving. That feature was a light on her dash that glowed green when she was driving smoothly, braking gradually, and accelerating at a moderate piece. It glowed red when she drove like a bat out of hell, braked hard, and turned sharply. While driving her clunky little Insight, her focus was on how to make that light stay green.
Continue reading Green Turismo: To save the Earth and save gas, turn cars into video games

Green Turismo: To save the Earth and save gas, turn cars into video games originally appeared on DailyFinance on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 15:40:00 EST. Autodesk's AutoCAD software suite is the standard tool used by designers and architects in the construction trade, and it dominates its market much like Adobe's Creative Suite dominates the print, graphic and interactive design fields. Its resellers are the hundreds of consulting organizations and systems integrators that sell Autodesk licenses to customers in the construction business. Like many big software companies, Autodesk relies on a huge reseller channel for the majority of its sales volume.

What my favorite resellers all told me was that they like to play construction-related stocks based on what they see happening at Autodesk, which serves all segments of the construction trade including building, civil engineering, office building design, and factory design.
Continue reading Is construction headed for a rebound? A prominent venture capitalist, she founded and remains the managing director of Nth Power, an early-stage venture capital fund based in San Francisco. Nth Power, a $180 million fund, has seen a number of successful exits, including companies specialized in biofuels and "smart" meters.

More than a quarter century ago, Floyd founded NFC Energy, one of the country's first wind development companies. She has also been active in non-profit energy projects, such as home audits, and sat on the Vermont Public Uitlities Commision. These days, she makes bets on the future of greentech. I sat down to talk with her in San Francisco. Here's an edited transcript of our conversation:
Continue reading Greentech VC Nancy Floyd: U.S. cleantech firms must go global to thrive

Greentech VC Nancy Floyd: U.S. cleantech firms must go global to thrive originally appeared on DailyFinance on Fri, 20 Nov 2009 09:59:00 EST. Two weeks ago, the search giant dropped a bomb on the GPS industry with the release of its free and open-source voice-activated navigation app -- sorry, Garmin (GRMN) and TomTom. Google is also in the process of blowing up the productivity applications business with its Google Apps offering, a suite of online email, word processing and other tools that costs a fraction of the price of Windows Office and other Microsoft (MSFT) software.

Today, Google's new Chrome browser-based OS came into clearer focus, and from the looks of it, Google may be en route to blowing up a handful of other businesses.
Continue reading Chrome doom: Google's Web-based OS could kill whole industries

Chrome doom: Google's Web-based OS could kill whole industries originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 19 Nov 2009 16:30:00 EST. It came this time when officials moved on Nov. 18 to ban sales of all big-screen TVs in California after 2010 if the sets don't meet state energy efficiency requirements. The ban has been brewing for several months now as the California Energy Commission (CEC) has debated a mandate that would require a 33% improvement in energy efficiency for all TVs sold starting Jan. 1, 2011, and a 50% improvement for sets sold starting Jan. 1, 2013.

These mandates would force off the market all current-generation plasma TVs with screens over 40 inches. LCD (liquid crystal display) sets tend to be more efficient, but many of the current models also wouldn't meet the new requirements. In short: Hasta la vista, Señor Plasma!
Continue reading California bans power-hog TVs. I'm certain this offer is sincere. However, as someone who has tried launch a small business and who has many small-business owners as friends, I can assure you that most of them don't need any community college course to learn how to make money.

No, their needs are far more mundane. They need cheaper health insurance for their employees. They need lower taxes on their revenues. They need more earnings to pay their employees a fair living. They need funds to buy supplies because their credit lines have been eliminated and their vendors are demanding COD payments. In short, they need more money, not more schooling.
Continue reading Note to Goldman: Small-biz education is good. Called WindowsAzure, this new Microsoft offering will allow companies to write code on a cloud-based operating system that runs in Microsoft data centers. After a year of testing, Azure is slated to go live in January, with paying customers coming aboard in February.

Microsoft is playing catchup in the cloud realm. Amazon (AMZN) and Google (GOOG) have both been running live cloud-computing offerings for over a year and have gained considerable traction with Internet companies and IT organizations seeking to avoid the limitations of physical servers, hardware maintenance and static bandwidth contracts. The big surprise that Ozzie unveiled, however, wasn't technological. It was actually a customer: Automattic, the hot software and blog hosting company that is behind the highly popular WordPress platform.
Continue reading Microsoft brings WordPress onto its cloud: Automattic blogs will go Azure

Microsoft brings WordPress onto its cloud: Automattic blogs will go Azure originally appeared on DailyFinance on Wed, 18 Nov 2009 09:00:00 EST. So Apple (AAPL) spoke to mobile online advertising company AdMob before the company's CEO Omar Hamoui inked its recent $750 million deal with Google (GOOG), Bloomberg and others have reported. This was unusual as Apple has typically steered well clear of advertising or of anything that required a serious sales force beyond its retail domain.

A mobile advertising network requires both a salesforce but also its own marketing efforts and other assorted business functions currently not native to Apple. The AdMob purchase was a comfortable fit for Google, in all probability, because AdMob's vice president of engineering and top technical officer Kevin Scott is a Google alum (he served as senior engineering manager).
Continue reading The real prize in Google's AdMob buy: iPhone user data

The real prize in Google's AdMob buy: iPhone user data originally appeared on DailyFinance on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 19:30:00 EST. It's part engineering marvel, a mechanism that takes one of the most foul side effects of parenthood and absorbs it into a small, manageable, plastic-wrapped package. But it's also part environmental catastrophe.

The average baby makes nearly 6,000 diapers dirty before becoming bathroom-trained. Waste watchers estimate that 27.4 billion disposable diapers are discarded each year in the U.S., adding as much as 3.4 million tons to dumps annually.

And that's not all. Each disposable diaper contains plastics and, in many cases, toxic chemical residues that show up in paper products, such as the chlorine used to make those diapers lily white.
Continue reading Turning dirty diapers into . . . bicycle helmets?

Turning dirty diapers into . . . bicycle helmets? originally appeared on DailyFinance on Tue, 17 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. It's a big ambition, but it's looking less implausible all the time. Previously, social networks were strong in one region primarily or in several, but never globally. Friendster couldn't catch on in Europe or South America. MySpace was much weaker in Asia than in the U.S.

Facebook, however, is well on its way to establishing dominance in several parts of the world. Already very strong in North America and Europe, Zuckerberg (pictured) looks set to take Asia, too.
Continue reading Facebook, aiming for global domination, is gaining quickly in Asia

Facebook, aiming for global domination, is gaining quickly in Asia originally appeared on DailyFinance on Mon, 16 Nov 2009 18:15:00 EST. You can't fix what you can't measure. And it won't cost that much to measure carbon emissions down to the factory smokestack. For the entire U.S., Woelk believes a carbon measurement network can be built for $300 million in less than five years. To build a global system? Less than $5 billion.

Considering that the Administration's "Cash for Clunkers" program cost over $1 billion and will have very little impact on U.S. energy consumption or carbon emissions, Woelk's proposal would seem to be one that's nearly impossible to refuse. "It's a tiny amount of money, ridiculously small" says Woelk
Continue reading A plan to measure carbon emissions that even a dummy could run

A plan to measure carbon emissions that even a dummy could run originally appeared on DailyFinance on Sat, 14 Nov 2009 16:00:00 EST. That's an increase of more than 30% in picture density from the previous 720p streams. Company product manager Hunter Walk announced the news at the NewTeeVee Live conference in San Francisco, an event that brought together a motley assortment of upstart players (Boxee, Clicker) and industry heavyweights, (CBS Interactive, Comcast, and Cisco Systems).

The news signifies an even deeper commitment by Google, the search giant, to provide video content that rivals what the most sophisticated cable and over-the-air broadcast networks offer.
Continue reading Google pumps up YouTube with better HD and recommendation tools

Google pumps up YouTube with better HD and recommendation tools originally appeared on DailyFinance on Fri, 13 Nov 2009 09:30:00 EST. Them's fighting words for cable and programming giant Comcast, which is putting up a lively fight to keep control of customers in the face of incursions both from tech giants like Apple, with its Apple TV product, and upstarts like Boxee, which offers a browser that acts like a TV guide for video content available online.

To this end, Comcast is on the brink of rolling out a video-on-demand service to most of its customers that would let them watch programming paid for under their Comcast subscription on any device and over any type of reasonably fast connection. Called Fancast, this untethered access would compete directly with Apple, as well as Netflix (NFLX), Verizon (VZ) and Qualcomm (QCOM).
Continue reading Comcast to Boxee: Bring it on, we're ready for the competition

Comcast to Boxee: Bring it on, we're ready for the competition originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 16:40:00 EST. Hurd expertly cut back in slow-growing units while priming faster-growing businesses for higher performance. He pulled off a string of acquisitions aimed at broadening HP's ability to deliver consulting services, and he plugged holes in its product lineup.

Hurd also took HP's sprawling bureaucracy and turned it into a transparent cash machine with a cutting-edge infrastructure that let him see day-to-day sales trends for every unit. In other words, Hurd made HP function a lot more like Cisco Systems (CSCO), the giant network equipment maker that has been a crucial HP partner for over a decade.
Continue reading HP's 3Com deal could prove to be CEO Mark Hurd's ultimate test

HP's 3Com deal could prove to be CEO Mark Hurd's ultimate test originally appeared on DailyFinance on Thu, 12 Nov 2009 14:21:00 EST. On Nov. 11, Microsoft (MSFT) announced a deal with Wolfram|Alpha, the search engine created by Mathematica founder and math genius Stephen Wolfram. Microsoft will be Wolfram|Alpha's first partner and will incorporate results from the search engine, which aims to provide actual answers to questions asked in natural language.

This follows on the heels of Microsoft inking deals to pull in real-time update data from Twitter and Facebook. But perhaps best for Microsoft was Bing's very strong traffic growth numbers for October.
Continue reading Bing bounces back, racking up a Wolfram|Alpha deal and rising traffic

Bing bounces back, racking up a Wolfram|Alpha deal and rising traffic originally appeared on DailyFinance on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 16:20:00 EST. Brazilian Finance Minister Guido Mantega flatly told the BBC on its Business Daily podcast that if the West wants Brazilian farmers to stop their deforestation of the Amazon Rainforest, the rich world will have to compensate his nation for its idled agricultural capacity.

The logic behind this argument is somewhat clear. Brazil and the other developing nations claim they are too poor to sacrifice local economic development to accommodate global needs. Further, the logic goes, the West and the developed world did most of the damage to the environment by pumping out greenhouse gases during two centuries of breakneck industrial growth. Now, the developing world says, the West needs to realize that it must pay for the lifestyle its hot-shower-taking, SUV-driving citizens consider to be their birthright.
Continue reading Brazil to rich countries: Pay up, or the rainforest gets it

Brazil to rich countries: Pay up, or the rainforest gets it originally appeared on DailyFinance on Wed, 11 Nov 2009 11:00:00 EST. With the apparent resolution of the spinout of Net calls pioneer Skype several days ago has come frenzied dealmaking in the VoIP -- short for voice over Internet protocol -- space.

First, Google bought startup Gizmo5. Now, as TechCrunch reports, there is a bidding war ongoing for JahJah, a Skype-like service that offered low-cost calling to tens of millions of users of Yahoo's (YHOO) instant messenger service. Numbers thrown around for the deal are a whopping $200 million to $400 million, a significant sum in the current environment.
Continue reading Ma Bell's wake-up call: Deals among Net calling firms may sap big telcos' revenue

Ma Bell's wake-up call: Deals among Net calling firms may sap big telcos' revenue originally appeared on DailyFinance on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 18:45:00 EST. He is one of a growing number of A-list venture capitalists who have jumped the fence from IT into alternative energy and greentech ventures. Oak Investment Partners is one of the most venerable venture capital firms in the country, and Hinman is the firm's point man on greentech. He's the kind of guy that you have to listen to based on his track record -- co-founder of a two successful companies and a former CEO of a third. Hinman founded Picturetel, which was later acquired by telecom equipment company PolyCom (PLCM). Hinman then founded 2Wire, another telecom equipment company that ended up with revenues greater than $300 million.

So this is a guy with no Internet fluff in his pillow. Hinman is a hard-core engineer with 12 patents to his name. Hinman also loves to talk ideas about greentech innovations and sits on the boards of seven different Oak greentech portfolio companies. He has a fairly encyclopedic knowledge of the industry. Our talk ranged widely, so I've edited heavily. Here are some brief excerpts from our conversation:
Continue reading The future of solar, water and greentech: Talking with A-list VC guy Brian Hinman

The future of solar, water and greentech: Talking with A-list VC guy Brian Hinman originally appeared on DailyFinance on Tue, 10 Nov 2009 13:00:00 EST. Chrysler has also backed off a bold January 2009 pledge to manufacture 500,000 conventional and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles by 2013. Reuters reported the sad news late Friday in an interview with Fiat CEO Serigo Marchionne.

Fiat, reportedly aghast at the horrific condition of its newly acquired U.S. subsidiary, decided to pull the plug on the speculative but exciting effort to add some green to Detroit's also-ran brand.
