Percolating debate in wake of Seattle's Best expansion
8:00AM 9/04/2010
Here's a Labor Day Weekend conundrum for you: Starbucks Corp. sent out a press release trumpeting its expansion of Seattle's Best Coffee outlets to 30,000 this week. There were just 3,000 six months ago.
At the same time, Starbucks has been listed as one of the country's biggest dispensers of...
Initial jobless claims fell by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 456,000. This moves us back to nearly the same level of jobless claims in January, which signals that the labor market is slowly improving but remains sluggish. Laid-off workers who continue to claim jobless benefits have declined by the...

Joseph Gliottone has a quick comeback to his former advertising colleagues when they ask him about his new job picking up dog poop.

Not everyone who gets laid off from a job is unhappy about it. Four in 10 U.S. workers who have lost their jobs in this recession, or are in a relationship with someone who has, say it was a blessing in disguise, according to a survey by SnagAJob.com. About 39% of people who say they or their...
Some people are being turned down for jobs because they have bad credit. Nearly half of all employers check credit reports to screen folks during the application screening process, according to the Herald of Monterey County.
That means that many unemployed folks who are struggling because of the...
Everyone in an office has an opinion on who the slackers are in their area and who should be fired or laid off if it comes to that. But they don't get to make those decisions; the bosses do.

Canned over a tuna fish sandwich: Employers use any excuse (and the recession) to lay off workers
4:30PM 3/17/2009
Anyone who has worked in food service knows that any day-old goods are up for grabs. I've heard of people feeding their whole families on leftovers brought home from work. And once it does go to the trash, it's often picked up by dumpster divers. And why not? Better to feed someone than let it go...
Even though he could be counted on to always know your name and favorite drink Eddie Doyle, the real life Cheers bartender, was laid off late last month along with several other employees of Cheers. Doyle's layoff from his "perfect job" has been blamed on the continued economic crisis that has...
