The nation%u2019s manufacturing recovery accelerated in October as factory output jumped 0.5%, the Federal Reserve said. Overall industrial output was flat in the month, but the typical autumn plunge in utilities output skewed the top-line stat lower.

When summers get as hot as this one, it's difficult to imagine what people did before air conditioning existed. Swimming holes, hand-held fans and ice cubes down your back will only go so far when sooner or later, you have to return to the confines of some stifling domicile that badly...

As severe heat grips most of the East, sales in the ice cream, air conditioner, pools, seashore-related and bowling center segments have spiked with the temperature. The solid sales are welcome relief for industries burned by the recession.

Even as homebuilding remains in the doldrums, a booming replacement business for air conditioning systems and a new venture with Carrier are giving Watsco a boost. Now in the high $50s, it could return to its all-time high of $73 within a year.
The average U.S. household will spend about $2,160 this year on home energy, which is $60 less than in 2009, according to the Alliance to Save Energy.
