AirlineFees
Hey, is the recession over or something? Must be, because the airlines have suddenly decided to go crazy, raising our baggage fees again. Continental started it, hiking its domestic rates a jaw-dropping $10, from $15 to $25 for the first bag. The second bag now costs $35, up from $25.
An internal memo at British Airways has been leaked, and it portends a gloomy next step for the major carriers.
As of Oct. 7, the airline confirmed to WalletPop, everyone flying on its jets will have to pay extra if they want a seat assignment before they get to the airport. Up to now, that's...
Behold! The $11 in-flight meal. But is it worth it?
2:30PM 9/24/2009
Now that airline fees are part of the furniture, we venture to the next new wrinkle in the sky. Airlines, knowing their bottom lines depend on surcharges, are learning to make those surcharges less painful by offering higher quality for them -- or, at least, pretending to.
Take Midwest Airlines....
Impatience fee: Southwest dings passengers $10 to board first
7:00AM 9/03/2009
That "ding" sound you hear on Southwest Airlines flights isn't its lovable commercials, but cash registers ringing for charging passengers who just insist on being first onboard the plane.Southwest Airlines on Thursday is starting its $10 "EarlyBird Check-in" program, joining the airline game of...
Airlines making a mint off your booking errors
4:00PM 7/23/2009
The British, as a culture, have come a long way since swiping the Elgin Marbles from Greece. They still won't give them back, of course, but the British are nonetheless inscrutably accountable these days. If their elected leaders so much as replace a broken water heater on the public dime, the...
Continental Airlines is gasping for breath, so by golly, its customers will have to be as well. It has announced the elimination of some 1,700 jobs, and at the same time, it's grasping for funds by hiking fees yet again. If you fly on Continental after Aug. 19, you will now pay $20 for the first...
US Airways, United charging fees on top of fees
12:30PM 6/22/2009
They said it couldn't be done. USA Today almost couldn't do it. It took a week for a reporter there to sit down and sort out all the assorted extra fees that that the airlines are charging. The paper's table will be current for about a week, because more unexpected and unheralded fees are being...
Michael O'Leary, the doofus head of ultra-cheap Irish airline Ryanair, is at it again. He's trying to whip up cheap publicity by making light of his airline's dreadful penchant for microcharging its customers to death. On a TV show in Britain, he said, perhaps in jest, he was considering charging...
It's microcharging gone too far. The European airline Ryanair is tearing out the check-in desks at 146 airports where it flies. As of October, if you want to check in for a Ryanair flight, you've got to do it in advance for £5 ($7.60) per flight, and if you forget, you'll be slapped with a...
It's not often these days that we have cause to praise an airline, but today, the news is good.
Alaska Air announced that it will guarantee timely delivery of your luggage to the baggage claim. If your bag takes longer than 25 minutes after your plane is parked at the gate, then you'll...
