Midland Farms of Menands, N.Y., is recalling a number of milk products due to potentially improper pasteurization, New York State Agriculture Commissioner Patrick Hooker announced. Pasteurization heats milk to eliminate pathogenic bacteria, such as Listeria and Salmonella. The recalled milk products are sold in plastic containers and marketed under the brand names Midland Farms, Corrado's Market, Jersey Dairy Farms and Trade Fair Premium. All the recalled milk is stamped with the plant code 36-1661, as well as a black date code near the top of the container.
The recalled milk was sold in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Rhode Island.
The problem was detected by New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets' milk inspectors on Sept. 7, 2010, when they discovered malfunctioning pasteurization equipment at the Menands plant.
While the recalled products have not been found to be contaminated with any harmful pathogens, the company is voluntarily recalling all production as a precautionary measure.
No illnesses have been reported and consumers are warned not to use or consume the recalled products, even if it does not appear or smell spoiled.
