The Product: The FURminator DeShedding Tool
The Price: $18 to $25
The Claims: Reduce shedding by 90%
Buy-O-Meter Rating: 4 out of 5

The FURminator is a grooming comb that rakes your pet's undercoat to reduce shedding by 90%, the infomercial claims.

That 90% claim is hard to prove. But the hand-sized tool does pull clouds of loose hair off furry beasts.

I tested it on Travis, my neighbor's gorgeous collie, who leaves a trail of hair wherever he goes during warm weather. Travis' regular pin brush grabs a fair amount of shedding hair, but it's still hard to reach the dog's thick undercoat.

The FURminator is designed to burrow into a pet's undercoat to pull out loose hair. My local dog groomer uses it regularly on dogs with double coats, such as Huskies and Golden Retrievers.

Travis seemed to enjoy being groomed with the FURminator, which sports a ridged rubber handle that makes it easy to grip. The dog acted like the tool's tiny, sharp teeth were blissfully scratching his back.

However, the FURminator isn't meant for and doesn't work well on dogs with a poodle coat. And you must be careful to avoiding scraping your pet when grooming along bone lines.

FURminator comes in several sizes, with prices ranging from $18 to $25 for edges ranging from 1.75 inches to 5 inches.

If you've got a shedding pet who's dropping his coat on your carpet and couch, the FURminator can make his hair today, gone tomorrow.
