In Southern California, flea markets are big business. The long-running Rose Bowl Flea Market is a local institution, and pop-up markets in other cities have created something of a pocket weekend industry for antiquers, clothes hounds, and crafters. On a sizzling hot day in July, a huge new endeavor debuted: The L.A. Flea Market, a monthly event held in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium overlooking downtown Los Angeles, appeared. I was there. And I met Rick Dees!

The next L.A. Flea Market happens this Sunday, August 29.

This flea market is promoted by Phillip Dane, a local rummage sale impresario who also organized the city's Fairfax High Flea Market. This new production, the biggest regular market attempted in the downtown area, purports to provide a full day's entertainment, so it also hosts live music, games and go-karts.

Tourists to L.A. may not be able to tote home furniture deals, but the Market also gives visitors a rare one-stop opportunity to stuff themselves at a flotilla of gourmet food trucks -- the same ones that WalletPop told you about in a video a few months ago.

Update, November 2010:
The event is now called the Flea Market at Dodger Stadium and happens on Saturdays. Its website is www.pdmarkets.com.
