has announced the addition of the "
Wind
Power Generation" report to their offering.
The US wind power generation industry includes about 200 companies that
operate single-location wind farms and large multiple-location wind
farms. Major companies in the small but rapidly growing industry include
NextEra Energy (formerly FPL Group), AES, MidAmerican Energy Holdings,
Iberdrola Renewables (a US division of Spain's Iberdrola Renovables),
and US operations of England's BP. Major suppliers of wind farm
infrastructure include divisions of GE and Siemens (Germany). The
industry is concentrated: the top five companies account for about 50
percent of the wind capacity, according to the American Wind Energy
Association.
Electric power generation, electric power distribution, solar power
generation, and natural gas production and distribution are covered in
separate industry profiles.
COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Demand for wind power generation is driven by public support for
alternative, non-polluting renewable energy production methods, and
government incentives that encourage the production and use of renewable
energy. Profitability of individual companies depends on strategically
locating wind farms in geographies with sufficient wind conditions and
access to electric transmission facilities. Large companies often have
other energy holdings (such as traditional electricity generation plants
and energy distribution operations), enjoy economies of scale in
equipment purchasing, and can serve a broader geographic area. Small
companies can compete effectively by promoting themselves as "greener"
than traditional energy companies, and through serving local communities.
