Healthways Ranks 13 th in InformationWeek 500 List of Technology Innovators for 2013

Use of Cloud-Based Technologies Helps Company Optimize and Scale Its Market-Leading Well-Being Improvement Solutions

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Global well-being improvement leader Healthways (NAS: HWAY) has ranked 13th on this year's InformationWeek500. The annual list, in its 25th year, recognizes the most innovative users of business technology in the country. Healthways has been recognized six years in a row, this year for its work using cloud-based technologies to more flexibly accommodate varying volumes of users taking its well-being survey. The Company was also featured in the publication's "20 Great Ideas to Steal in 2013" coverage.

"Healthways is pioneering ground in the highly regulated health data sector, where security and privacy are paramount," said Michael Robinson, Microsoft's general manager of Health & Life Sciences. "They are leading the way in leveraging the cloud-based compute capacity of Microsoft Azure to deliver well-being improvement services at scale to even more people around the world."

The well-being survey, a scientifically validated instrument, is an integral part of the Healthways Well-Being Improvement Solution, a multi-faceted group of services that optimize care for the chronically ill, reduce health-related risks and keep healthy people healthy. The web-based survey measures an individual's overall well-being along five primary elements: purpose, social, financial, community and physical. Data from the Healthways well-being survey powers proprietary predictive models and allows Healthways to deliver meaningful support across diverse populations to improve employee performance and reduce healthcare costs.

Because the survey is usually administered during a company's annual health benefits enrollment period, load times can reach 100 times the average intensity for short durations. A cloud-based approach allows the Company to adjust scale as needed and more cost-effectively while still adhering to healthcare security regulations. Healthways worked with Microsoft to use Windows Azure as the platform for a hybrid public-cloud/on-premises setup, ultimately reducing the average cost of delivering the survey.

"It's an honor for Healthways to be ranked by InformationWeek as a leading technology innovator," said Guy Barnard, chief information officer of Healthways. "Continued enhancement of both the raw processing power and the quality of the user experience as we diagnose well-being needs at both individual and group levels allows us to provide the most effective and efficient well-being improvement solution available. Through this commitment, we are fulfilling our mission of improving the well-being of the world, one person at a time."

"The theme of this year's InformationWeek 500 is digital business. It's a movement rooted in big data, analytics, mobile computing, social networking and other customer-focused technologies that are turning companies and industries on their ear," said InformationWeek editor in chief Rob Preston. "Every enterprise is now a digital business — or needs to become one fast. The organizations in our ranking, like Healthways, are leading the way."
