Wausau Paper Whiffs on Revenues

Wausau Paper (NYS: WPP) reported earnings on July 29. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), Wausau Paper whiffed on revenues and missed expectations on earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue dropped significantly. Non-GAAP earnings per share dropped to a loss. GAAP loss per share grew.

Wausau Paper reported revenue of $87.6 million. The three analysts polled by S&P Capital IQ foresaw net sales of $204.4 million on the same basis. GAAP reported sales were 59% lower than the prior-year quarter's $212.9 million.

EPS came in at -$0.05. The four earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ averaged $0.05 per share. Non-GAAP EPS were -$0.05 for Q2 versus $0.09 per share for the prior-year quarter. GAAP EPS were -$1.11 for Q2 against -$0.03 per share for the prior-year quarter.

For the quarter, gross margin was 11.2%, 90 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was -0.9%, 290 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was -62.6%, much worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $91.8 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.10.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $506.9 million. The average EPS estimate is $0.19.
