UnitedHealthcare of California Receives Los Angeles Business Journal's 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Award

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Los Angeles Business Journal has awarded UnitedHealthcare of California the publication's 2013 Corporate Social Responsibility Award.

The award is part of Los Angeles Business Journal's Nonprofit & Corporate Citizenship Awards that recognize Southern California companies and nonprofits for their volunteerism, donations and sponsorships.

UnitedHealthcare received the Corporate Social Responsibility Award for its "collective efforts to promote, encourage, and organize company-sponsored programs and/or events, and to engage employees to participate in volunteerism."

In 2012, more than 2,000 UnitedHealthcare employees in Los Angeles County provided nearly 5,000 volunteer hours to area nonprofits with activities ranging from helping sort canned goods at local food banks to participating in local health fairs.

In recent years, UnitedHealthcare's California Health Care Investment Program has provided more than $53 million in financing to Los Angeles County health care organizations that provide care to underserved and underinsured communities in the region. Last year, UnitedHealthcare provided nearly $50,000 to Bienvenidos to help the nonprofit purchase, equip and help staff a mobile clinic to expand access to care for children, adults and families throughout East Los Angeles.

This year, UnitedHealthcare awarded $2.2 million in grants to three Los Angeles nonprofits to help improve health care services and wellness programs for people living in underserved communities. The grants are part of $5.2 million UnitedHealthcare is awarding to nine health care organizations to support nonprofit clinics and hospitals that improve health care services for underserved communities in California.

"UnitedHealthcare and our employees are grateful for the opportunities to serve the local communities where we live and work by supporting local nonprofits, schools and organizations that help improve the health of our neighborhoods in Los Angeles and statewide," said Brandon Cuevas, CEO, UnitedHealthcare of California.

UnitedHealthcare of California serves more than 2.4 million health plan participants statewide through a health care provider network that includes more than 57,000 physicians and nearly 320 hospitals.
