The cure, or even just an effective treatment, for Alzheimer's disease has remained elusive for decades. Many pharmaceutical companies to date have jumped on the bandwagon for targeting beta amyloid plaques after they develop. Unfortunately, no matter how promising drugs appear in phase 2 results, they fail in phase 3 trials without slowing the progression of this debilitating neurological disease. Now, researchers at the University of Cambridge have discovered the mechanism for the formation of beta amyloid plaques. Can this discovery lead to an effective treatment?
