Health Net and VELA "The Light of the Community" to Provide New Source for Health Information in East Los Angeles
Health Net Plaza at the East Los Angeles Farmers Market delivers nutrition, fitness and health insurance information to local community
"Each Saturday, Health Net Plaza is where local residents will be able to participate in nutrition and fitness activities that help them make healthy lifestyle choices, like healthy cooking demonstrations, group fitness sessions and health screenings," said Carol Kim, Health Net's manager of Community Engagement. "In addition, Health Net representatives will answer questions about low-cost health insurance coverage options."
"We're delighted with the introduction of Health Net Plaza," said Grace Gonzalez, executive director of VELA "The Light of the Community," which organizes the weekly farmers market featuring local, fresh-picked fruits and vegetables. "Health Net Plaza is expected to complement the East Los Angeles Farmers Market with various activities and resources that will help make it an even more important destination for local residents and their families to learn more about nutrition, fitness and better health."
According to statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Office of Minority Health, Latinos in the United States have higher rates of obesity and diabetes than many other non-Latino populations.
"Health Net has operated our Community Solutions Center in East Los Angeles for several years, and we understand many of the health issues and challenges facing the Latino community there," said Kim. "Health Net Plaza is one more way we are providing a healthy, culturally sensitive source of information and activities, in both Spanish and English, for East Los Angeles residents."
Health Net Plaza is scheduled to be introduced this Saturday, April 6, 2013, at a special celebration at the East Los Angeles Farmers Market, located at the East Los Angeles Civic Center, 4801 East Third Street (on the Metro Gold Line at the East Los Angeles Civic Center station).
Scheduled to appear at the celebration, which begins at 10 a.m., are state Sen. Ed Hernandez and Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez, both of whom represent East Los Angeles. Planned activities include a 20-minute group fitness activity and screenings for blood sugar, blood pressure and body fat.
