For the quarter ended Feb. 28 (Q3), FedEx beat slightly on revenues and whiffed on earnings per share.

EPS came in at $1.23. The 27 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ predicted $1.38 per share. Non-GAAP EPS of $1.23 for Q3 were 21% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.55 per share. GAAP EPS of $1.13 for Q3 were 32% lower than the prior-year quarter's $1.65 per share.

Margin details
For the quarter, gross margin was 24.2%, 50 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 5.8%, 130 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 3.3%, 160 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. (Margins calculated in GAAP terms.)

Looking ahead
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $11.48 billion. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $1.99.

Next year's average estimate for revenue is $44.31 billion. The average EPS estimate is $6.06.
