How to Make Your Sneakers Last Longer

If you work out or run regularly, you should invest in a good pair of sneakers to ensure you're comfortable and safe. These days, trainers can be expensive, though, so proper care is the key to making them last longer.

First, only use your sneakers when you're working out, reports About.com. They may be easy to slip on for errands, but the extra use may be putting unnecessary miles on your shoes. Another way to preserve your workout shoes is to have two pairs that you rotate for exercise or training. This way, it will take you longer to wear them down.

Proper storage will also extend the life of your shoes. Keep sneakers in a cool, dry place where they can air out. In other words, don't leave them in your car or gym bag. Also, if they get wet, simply take out the insoles, use a light brush to remove any dirt from the outside and let them air dry. You can also try stuffing them with newspaper for faster results.

Whatever you do, don't put your sneakers in the dryer. According to Runner's World, the dryer "breaks down the shoe materials" and dries out the leather. Plus, the banging sound isn't exactly music to people's ears.

Of course, the durability of your shoes will depend on what kind of exercises you're doing and how you do them. Every person is different. Keep a log of how long your sneakers last before they show wear and tear, and make sure you talk to a sales associate who can help match you with the right pair of sneakers for your needs. Remember these tips before you hit the pavement and you'll save more money in the, well, long run.

Hi. My name is brittwedel and I am a shoeaholic. I buy many pairs of shoes (only what my shoe budget allows and when affordable so I'm not one of these people using grocery and utilities money on shoes). Since I have so many (I won't tell you how many bc some people might freak out), I'm able to rotate them so much that they never get worn down. After wearing them, I wipe them down if they have got any dirt or dust from the day on them and wrap them back up like I got them, put them back in the box, and store them gently in my closet. I still have shoes from years and years ago that people always think are brand new. I know not everyone can have as many shoes as me, but I'm just commenting on how I take care of my shoes (sandals, heels, wedges, boots, sneakers, etc.) and make them last a very long time in great shape.

Why pay retail. The last pair of shoes I bought was from Goodwill. Brand new pair of Congress All-Stars I purchased for $4.50. Well not really because it was Wednesday I got 15% off. So I got them for under $4.00. A week later my wife dragged me to Kohl's and I saw the exact same pair for $44.95. Previously I found a new pair of Jordan high tops for $6.99. I showed them to my son-in-law and he thought they were worth about $200. I didn't get a discount on those because it wasn't Wednesday.

1. There are no All-Stars in Congress.
2. If there were, they'd cost several thousand times as much, and they wouldn't work at all.

Most dryers have racks for shoes/sneakers and they don't get knocked around, just dry from the heat.

Doesn't everyone get tired of these articles with "one size fits all" advice"? One example..all athletic shoes are not leather. You can ingore the dryer part of the equation entirely if you have a high efficiency front loading washer. On high speed spin, your shoes will come out only slightly damp and ready for wear.

Hmm, my running shoes are 5 year old regular tennish shoes that have JB weld to keep the pads on the bottom of the shoe. My feet aren't complaining at all.

I like the idea of having 2 pair and rotating, so the shoe lasts twice as long.

So you spend twice as much and lasts twice as long, sounds like buying one pair and then replacing when necessary.

Unless of course you get a great sale on an item and them you can stock up.
