Dolby's Next-Generation Sound Technology to Appear in ZTE Smartphones

Sound technology specialist Dolby Laboratories announced yesterday that its Dolby Digital Plus platform will appear in a wide range of smartphones and tablets from ZTE.

The portfolio of products includes ZTE's Grand Memo, the first smartphone to be powered by Dolby Digital Plus technology with a next-generation audio processing engine that offers an "immersive surround sound experience," capabilities to improve dialogue intelligibility, and volume leveling.

He Shiyou, ZTE's executive VP and head of the Terminal Division, was quoted as saying, "Delivering a quality entertainment experience is key to meeting the needs of today's mobile consumers."

Dolby's sound engineers are also able to customize the experience for the specific device. In the Grand Memo, bass and treble have been optimized to produce the "most natural, balanced sound" with the least possible noise and distortion. By fine-tuning the technology to each device, Dolby Digital Plus is able to take advantage of special features built into the devices, such as the power management capabilities designed into the Grand Memo. The smartphone will soon be available in Europe.

Dolby Digital Plus is now available on more than 1 billion products, including HDTVs, smartphones, tablets, PCs, game consoles, and Blu-ray disc players.
