Savings Experiment: Mail-Order Food

Have you tried mail order food?

Did you find our video on mail order food helpful?

It's not always easy to get to the grocery store, which is why food-of-the-month clubs can be enticing options. However, while they offer convenience, they can also be costly. So, does it pay to have your food shipped or are you better off having it served to you at a restaurant?

For instance, the coffee-of-the-month club on AmazingClubs.com will get you a pound of coffee for $15. That works out to 94 cents for a 16-ounce cup of brewed joe. If you were to go to a coffee shop, that same cup of java could cost you anywhere from $2 to $5 dollars, so between the two, the monthly club appears to be better deal.

But, if you're going to brew at home, you might as well go to the grocery store and buy a bag of grounds there. You can make yourself a 16-ounce cup of Eight O'Clock coffee that will only cost you 45 cents. That's half off the club price. However, if you're looking for variety and a gourmet experience, mail-order is the way to go.

Omaha Steaks is one of the largest purveyors of beef, and at $89 per shipment, you're looking at approximately $30 per pound. In this case, it's better to dine out. When it comes to steak, restaurants can't charge people $40 or more per entree, so they often break even or sell it at a loss. They make up for the loss by marking up soda and other beverages, so if you stick with water, you'll be walking away with a full stomach and a great deal.

Steak Mail orderBottom line: Mail-order food comes with a price tag for its convenience, but there are values to be had. Depending on your tastes, a little research will make the costs easier to digest.

After learning my lesson, one thing I won't buy on line again is ice cream.

The thing with companies like Omaha Steak is that they think that their product is superior to what you can get at the store, but it isn't. And $30 for the same beef? Only a fool would pay that!

he person who wrote this is not really a coffee drinker. Anyone who cares about the cost per cup, and who recommends Eight O'Clock coffee because it's cheap, might as well drink brown water. She compares the cost of grinding your own beans at home and the cost of having it at a coffee shop, and though I probably don't have to explain why to those who are real coffee aficionados, that is totally ridiculous. It's a totally different experience, not only for the cost (which goes without saying would be more of course --- need I say why?), but you get what you pay for.

If you live in a city like New York, there are plenty of places to buy recently roasted beans of good quality (certainly not the A&P brands), and if you don't have access to a market with beans, then there are several good mail order resources.

idiots wrote this article , go to the slaughter house and save 75% on the cost of meat. Go to the Grocery Store and buy a Value Brand and have the cup of coffee with a Creamer flavoring of sayyy French Vanilla and spend a quarter a cup . Same with food ..buying at a Grocery Store and cooking at home saves about 60% or more depending on if you buy name brand or value Brand.

Just find some crackhead on foodstamps and buy them for 50cents on the dollar. Use coupons on top of that. Buy food only on sale. I do as well as those folks on extreme couponing. I spend about $50 or less a month on groceries that I normally would have easily paid over $200 bucks for. Hey, it is what it is.

So, you admit to paying 50 cents on the dollar to some crackhead so you can save big bucks at the store? You'd be breaking the law! Buy food sale sounds easy but if it isn't your favorite brand it doesn't mean anything.

This article is so bad, they should be punished for writing it.
Restaurants do NOT sell steaks at break even or at a loss, unless there is a temporary promotion, or a problem with a supplier....at the $25.95 for the fillet on the menu...a lb of filet is roughly $14 today....most filets unless otherwise specified, are 6 ozs...but let's say 8ozs......ok, so 1/2 lb is $7......add a buck a each for salad, a baked potato or other starch, and $.50 for a roll and butter. That's $9.50...call it even $12, just to compensate for any waste, and then add $1 for the cook, $1 for support staff and 10% for general overhead.....$16.50.....so this is total crap....I'm a retired chef and culinary instructor, so I know what I'm talking about......and this coffee thing.....a lb of coffee, makes 3 times as much coffee as the are saying....as I said....this article is rediculous

I totally agree. Restaurants are in business to make money....a Lot of it! This article is totally distorted, and feeding false information.

Dems aren't naive....we know republicans are replete with double digit IQs, racists and idiots, complemented by drooling old white men who believe Reagan was a great president....now THAT is naive!

Pretty lame/misleading video/article when looking at the title...I always find these 'savings experiments' very misleading...like they tease you with a headline to try to get you to watch the video/read the article only to find out 99% of the time that the article/video does not match up with the headline.....

Living where I do, I would be very interested in either mail order delivery or local delivery assuming the quality is good..But they are very hard to find locally so always interested in trying to find online places that will ship a good variety & good quality...

So, when I saw this headline I was like 'ok great, maybe I'll get a few names of online places' & I can then research them..

Only to find what I always do on 'The Savings Experiment'....An article/video that tells me nothing.

All they mention is coffee & Omaha Steaks, which most already know about.....No other companies mentioned...nothing...nada...zilch......100% WORTHLESS ARTICLE/VIDEO..

So, why am I wasting my time leaving a comment?

Cause I hope these clowns will read it or even the advertisers so I can say 1 more thing before I NEVER CLICK ON THIS SITE EVER AGAIN---

& I just said it...Yep, thats right.....I will no longer visit this site & any advertisers on this site will never get my biz........EVER!!!
C-Ya Savings Experiment....your site is a JOKE & I will not support it or support anybody that helps you put out this non stop deceptive tripe...

& BTW...TONS of your 'experiments' are flat out 100% wrong...& in fact, many of them will cost folks more money & in many cases it can be real bad....Such as the experiment on saving money on heating & cooling (amongst MANY others)..Not only was the advice you gave pathetically wrong, costing anybody that followed your advice to SPEND MORE MONEY TO BE LESS COMFORTABLE, but that advice, if followed, could kill your rather expensive heating/cooling system & at the least, it will shoten its life BIGTIME, lead to expensive repairs as well as make the system less efficient...

Tons of AWFUL device on this site, not to mention very misleading...Sometimes I wonder why they call these folks 'experts', when their advice is far from expertize & could be ALOT more costly & do ALOT of damage to the naive who dont know any better & follow their STUPID tips..

GOOD RIDDANCE.....

I hope 1 day somebody follows your WRONG ADVICE & sues your pants off for the damage you cause by claiming to be experts & giving out advice that could harm folks that follow it....just a matter of time...hope nobody listened to their advice on heating/cooling...if so, I hope you sue the heck out of these clowns when your system dies....
