Warby Parker glasses

Would you shop for glasses online?

Did you find this glasses article helpful?

For many, eyeglasses are a necessity, but now that the functional frames have become a fashion accessory, prices have gone way up. Fear not, though, frugal shoppers. There are still places that offer stylish options at a deep discount.

First, a quick recap on how glasses, which were once viewed as undesirable, went from geek to chic. According to 60 Minutes, eyewear giant Luxottica has been at the forefront of the industry, teaming up with luxury brands to manufacture frames. Over the years, the Italian company has signed deals with the likes of Chanel, Prada, Gucci, Ralph Lauren and Versace, just to name a few, and has not only changed the perception of glasses, but raised the prices on them, too. On top of owning brands like Ray-Ban and Oakley, retail chains like LensCrafters, Pearle Vision and Sunglass Hut are also under Luxottica's umbrella.

"Luxottica's dominance ... it's what's called a price maker, which means that essentially it can set prices and other people will follow in its make," SmartMoney.com writer Brett Arends said when he sat down with the CBS news program. This explains why your local optician's prices are still high.

Although it is relatively inexpensive to make a pair of glasses, they generally retail for 20 times their cost -- and that's just for the frames. With prescription lenses, you could be looking at a $600 bill, if you were to opt for a pair of designer specs. The average cost of a pair of glasses is $300, which is still a hefty price tag for plastic, glass and metal.

Despite Luxottica's dominant market share, consumers can still get a deal on frames. The company's CEO Andrea Guerra names Walmart and Costco as its biggest competitors, while online retailers like Warby Parker, 39 Dollar Glasses and Eye Buy Direct are selling eyewear for hundreds less than their average cost.

Warby Parker, in particular, is giving luxury brands a run for their money by offering a line of trendy frames for $95, including prescription lenses made of polycarbonate plastic. According to the New York Times, the company "keeps prices low by ordering from manufacturers and selling directly to consumers."

"After we learned there was no reason that glasses should be this expensive, we said, why don't we create a different model?" Warby Parker co-founder David Gilboa told the paper. "We can bypass the retail channel and sell them for a hundred dollars and still have a very viable business."

In the end, that means you can afford fashionable frames at a lower price tag. So, the next time you're shopping for new glasses, consider looking online or heading to Walmart or Costco. Your eyes and your wallet will thank you.

Ive ordered from coastalcontacts.com, I think it was called and they often have a promotion where you can get frames and prescription lenses for just the price of shipping!! Its amazing, I got myself and my mother a pair for about $18 shipped. They were great normally very expensive frames and they were completely free. the promo is for new customers but I signed up and signed up for my mom's with my boyfriend's card. There really was no catch at all. you can add some extras for reasonable prices but you don't have to at all there's no pressure to (like reflection protection or extra scratch resistance) but you can just get the lenses and frames for just shipping, it was such a great deal the next time the promo comes around I'm going to get my mom another pair and my best friend a pair. They even come with a little bag, a nice case, a cleaning cloth and a tiny screw driver and extra screws for adjustments or if you lose a screw. They have name brands and all kinds... I was so psyched. I got them over a year ago and no problems at all ... (besides that my mom has lost hers already, lol). They don't even send you spam emails or anything, and if there is any mistake they take care of it all on their dime. I would give that a try as long as you have your prescription (my mom didn't have money to do the test so she just got the same specs that one of her friend wears that work for her so they don't even ask for you to send a prescription or anything.) you cant go wrong with name brand frames and script lenses for just the price of shipping which varies depending where you are in the US. i think its coastalcontacts.com or you can search on hip2save.com for "free glasses" just to make sure. I absolutely love mine they are super cute and fit perfectly, and my mom was so happy she actually said it was the best gift ever and she that was ecstatic every time I talked to her for about a month or so hehe, especially since it cost almost nothing :D She still says thank you every once in a while even though she lost them. She got herself a hanging neck string thing so she can just let them hang when they aren't on her face, for the next pair I get her so that she doesn't lose them again. (because they fell out of her shirt pocket when she bent down) Hope that helps someone! Good Luck trying it out, sooo worth it IMHO.

I found out this week that horn rimmed glasses are very "in," & apparently I'm out-of-it in the world of 7th grade boys fashion. (He looks like my dad when I was a baby in the late 60's!!)

The only thing that I like is finding frames that are identical to the ones that I am replacing so I can use my magnetic sunglasses that attach to them. I could care less about changing styles. I just want the same frames. So far I have managed to luck out. When I go to the beach, I wear a pair of really old plastic prescription sunglasses in the ocean that have large UV and UA blocking lenses. If they get damaged or lost, it is no big deal. I can still see while bobbing around in the water.

I prefer metal frames for everyday wear, because they take a beating and can be adjusted to fit better with very little effort. Plastic frames can break more easily and discolor around heat and chemicals.

Zenni Optical simply cannot be beat. For 15 to 20 bucks I can get an unlimited supply of single distance sunglass RX and the look great. For a little more I can get progressives or bi focals. Noone even comes close. Quality and speed of delivery are great too.

Cheap doesn't mean quality...and, where is the personal attention? If you need an adjustment, have a question, complaint, comment, or the prescription is made incorrectly, what recourse do you have at that time?? Customer service is also an important part of your local optometrist and optician. Sometimes buying cheap isn't the best way to go. This is your vision and your eyes for goodness sake. Are you really going to trust your most precious sense to online retailers?

I'm 53 years old. Just spent $23k getting my cataracts fixed. I now test 20/20 in both eyes. Don't need glasses anymore but thank you anyway.
