Newsweek to End Print Edition, Go All Digital

NEW YORK -- Newsweek plans to end its print publication after 80 years and will shift to an all-digital format aimed at online users starting in early 2013. Job cuts are expected.

Newsweek's last U.S. print edition will be its Dec. 31 issue.

With more and more consumers on the go and using their cell phones and tablets to receive the news, media organizations have had to increasingly shift more of their emphasis online.

SmartMoney, for example, announced in June that it was shuttering its print publication in favor of a digital format. Dow Jones & Co., a unit of News Corp., said at the time that 25 positions at SmartMoney would be eliminated.

Newsweek's decision does not come as a complete surprise. Barry Diller, the head of the company that owns Newsweek, announced in July that the publication was examining its future as a weekly print magazine. Diller said then that producing a weekly news magazine in print form wasn't easy.

The announcement of the change was made by Tina Brown, editor-in-chief and founder of The Newsweek Daily Beast Co., on The Daily Beast website Thursday.

"In our judgment, we have reached a tipping point at which we can most efficiently and effectively reach our readers in all-digital format," she said.

Brown said staff cuts are expected, but didn't give a specific figure. She also said that Newsweek's editorial and print operations would be streamlined in the U.S. and abroad.

Brown said that the online publication will be called Newsweek Global and will be a single, worldwide edition that requires a paid subscription. It will be available for tablets and online reading, with certain content available on The Daily Beast website.

"We are transitioning Newsweek, not saying goodbye to it," she said.

Disappointing, and disgusting, you are taking away the pleasure from the readers to hold the papers books in their hands. I will never ever, subscribe to any of these old classic magazines, from which i gathered so much information, and knowledge--You are depriving people from getting educated. While I understand that times change, somehow, lounging in the jacuzzi with a Kindle or i-Pad isn't as satisfying as with a paper format. And, if you drop the paper, you lose a buck or so--if you drop the others, you are out 100's.What's mroe, with mroe and more of these online content producers going to a format where you have NO CHOICE but to watch inane and idiotic ads, I predict less and less people will hook up to these new formats. If I want to read an ad, I will do so at my leisure and AFTER I have read the article. I hate that folks like AOL present content that has no way to get around this-hence I read less and less about the stories of the day. I will not be held hostage by advertisers.

Sorry...but I don't intend to be tied to electronic devices 24/7. When my subscription terminates, it will not be renewed.

Newsweek went so far left, lost site of the fact that it was a jounalistic magazine and became the editorial page for democrats. What it hopefully learned is that the country wants news and not some author or editor telling me how to think. Huffington and a number of other organizations will come to realize the same thing as their readership declines.

I think magazines are going by the wayside, they are a luxury, people just don't have money to buy them and their liberal agenda probably had alot to do with it also. I mean the photo of Sarah Palin where they photoshopped a mustache hair in was kind of the end of their credibility.

Face it, you just can't stand when your "guy" or your "beliefs" are shown to be without credibility-hence you label the facts "liberal" instead of delving deeper to determine if what was said is true and if so, why your guy/beliefs are off. No wonder America is losing the race for intelligent productive workers...
