NegotiateBy Emily Levy

When we talk about negotiation, we ask two central questions:
  1. How do we do it well?
  2. When is it appropriate?
We've got #1 covered with our start-to-finish negotiating 101 guide to asking for more at work, and 11 tips from experts and readers on bargaining at stores and on the phone.

That leaves us with #2: Most of us know we're supposed to negotiate when it comes to buying a house or a car, but how about at the dry cleaner? Or when we're on the phone with our cell phone provider?

Hesitate no longer.

Read on for five unexpected costs you should negotiate, and how.

Good tips. Have tried most of them. Cable bill is so overpriced and in this economy every business is fighting for survival so don\'t be timid. Ask nicely, but don\'t be too shy. The worst than can happen is the seller says \'no\'. Most of the time they either make a counteroffer or accept your deal. Don\'t try to act like a big deal negotiator, just be nice. For seniors, always ask for the senior discount. Many places have discounts, but you have to ask. My last mattress purchase I asked for the senior discount and got free delivery and disposal of old mattress and box springs. Saved me $35! Good luck.
