How often do you rent a vehicle?

Rental cars are often a necessity when it comes to travel, but it's easy to get taken for a ride. Here, our experts break down some key ways to get the vehicle you want, while landing big savings.

First, let's talk about the car. When reserving your wheels, going small can pay off big. Rental companies know that compact cars are less desirable, so they tend to carry more mid- to full-size models. However, if you reserve a compact car and none are available, the company is required to upgrade you to a more expensive car at no extra cost.

Next, keep your eyes on the daily rate, as it may not be as consistent as you think. In our example, booking a car for three days, cost a total of $236, which breaks down to $79 per day. Meanwhile, booking a car for a week will cost $364 or $52 per day. Sure, you're paying a higher total cost, but the per-day rate is much lower. So, when booking your vehicle, make sure to check out weekly rates. They may be more economical.

TAKE PHOTOS!
Many airport based rental centers are in poorly lit garages, however the return counters are very well lit! Even a thorough inspection can miss some damage. A flashlight app on your phone will usually show most chargeable dings.

They neglected to mention that some of the rental car companies actually require yoou to keep the car for the week that you contracted for and not bring it back early.

Recently I have found that there are better rates on the bigger cars due to the high price of gas.

Also, try using Priceline. Generally I get a good rate using them, but not always. Sometimes better with a Discount Rate code from some organization you might belong to. AAA, AARP, USAA, etc.

Wow, this is some really lame advise. Sure there is a chance you might get upgraded to a larger vehicle but there is a much greater chance that you'll wind up in the death trap you ordered. Why risk ruining a vacation having to drive around in an econobox just to save a few bucks. There usually is very little difference in price between a compact and a full sized car so you might as well be comfortable on the vacation that you have been looking forward to for so long. The prices really don't jump up much until you get into SUV's, convertibles or luxury cars.

For years I have used Enterprise. They pick you up, you get a clean, well maintained car, a free upgrade if they have one on the lot and do not charge any extra if you rent at an airport. I will never use anyone else.

I love the way the auto rental companies try to make renting a car sound like a wonderful way to get out of town and have a great weekend, just for one example. Renting a car from any of these money mad mavens is just a royal PITA. I know this because I just returned a rental car yesterday. It was $118 for two days (24 hour days) and I didn't take the optional insurance AND I again filled the car with gas just before returning it. This was to rent a Toyota Corolla. Did you know that a Corolla is a MEDIUM size car, at least according to Hertz Car Rental, and there was a $10.00 fee for an "upgrade" (why from a compact car, of course). The "compact" was a Ford Fiesta that I literally could not fit into. This was from an in-town location (not the airport) in a second-class Eastern city. Rent a car again? Only if the alternative is to CRAWL to my destination. I'm too good a money manager to go through this rip-off again.

Dollar Car rental in Maui is the pits. They gave me most unbeliveable rental cars I had ever seen. I reserved a economy car. They tried to give me an Old Crown Victoria, I rejected 4 cars before I got out of the lot. Then changed it again at the office near kaanapalli. It issues were that :the front wheels sounded like they were going to come off or Blowing burned oil smell thru the A/C. Terrible experience.

"I would also say doing a walk around the car and ANY dings, scratches, etc should be brought up and put IN WRITING on the rental receipt." WRONG!! - Demand another car! If I wanted a car with dings and scratches on it, I would have taken my wife's car.
