Wash and Save on Laundry

Where do you wash your laundry?

Did you find our video on laundry helpful?

Many of us have been taught to wash colored clothing in cold water and white laundry in hot water, but that old rule of thumb doesn't necessarily apply when you're trying to save money.

Ninety percent of energy used by washing machines goes into heating water, which means washing clothes on the hot or warm cycle is actually more costly than washing them on cold. When you break it down, doing laundry with a hot wash and warm rinse costs 60 cents per load, while a cold wash and cold rinse costs just 4 cents per load.

If your family does one load of laundry each week on the hot cycle, it will cost $35.36 for the year. Meanwhile, washing one load of clothes per week in cold water will cost just $2.08 for the year. That's 94 percent less expensive!

We replaced our 'always on' hot water propane water heater with a propane 'on demand' water heater.
With the 'always have' we bought propane 2 to 3 times a years.
With the 'on demand' heater we went 17 months before having to order propane.
The savings alone have already paid the cost of the purchase + of the 'on demand'.

Check out www.webesoapnuts.com How would you like to spend $19.99 for a 16 oz bag of soap nuts (wash berries) that will do up to 360 loads of wash for $19.99. It has other uses, even safe to wash baby clothes with your clothes. You can use the berries to wash your car, carpet, jewelry, etc. When your done you can throw the spent berries in the garden it will help keep bugs out. There are several sizes to pick from, there is a trial size for $2.99. You also can get a bag to share with someone but make sure you buy extra wash bags (linen bags). You put 5 berries in a bag and it will wash up to 10 loads, great for traveling or camping! See the web site www.webesoapnuts.com

One load a week? WHO does one load a week? There are only two of us and I have more laundry than that. My 95 year old father in law who lives alone has more laundry than that!

Wash your sheets and pillow cases in hot water to kill bacteria and most of all dust mites, no matter what the color is!

The article states that the washing machine heats the water? Who's machine does this? My machine has a hose from the hot and cold water pipes and the hot water comes from the water heater like it does for the rest of the house. And we have many kitties and towels, whites, sheets, socks and underwear always get hot water plus bleach.

No need to do sheets and towels in hot either, but one thing always is greasy work clothes, the grease does not break down in cold water, you must use hot.
