Target Store
Lance Armstrong isn't the only one ceding a crown this week.

Walmart (WMT), which has long claimed bragging rights as the nation's lowest-priced retailer, has unwittingly relinquished that title to Target (TGT) -- for a month, at least.

According to a Bloomberg study, the cheap-chic discounter has offered shoppers lower prices than Walmart this month, the first time since October, and by the widest pricing margin since the study launched two years ago.

The study looked at the gap in average prices between the two chains across 150 comparable items in stores within five miles of each other.

Findings showed that prices at Target were 0.46 percentage points less expensive than at Wal-Mart. Translation: For every $100, Target was 46 cents cheaper this month.

The study also found that Target, the second-largest discounter in the U.S., largely won the price game against Walmart in the supermarket aisle.

The news comes as Target angles for a bigger slice of consumers' food budgets, adding grocery departments to more than 1,000 locations in the past few years.

Meanwhile, Walmart has been on a mission to restore its low-price image.

In March, the retailer outlined a $2 billion plan to "reinvest" in low prices, particularly in food and consumables, to drive more traffic to its nearly 4,000 U.S. stores.

What a difference the economy makes!!!!! According to many consumers, Target - in the not too distant past - made great PR efforts to distance itself - not be considered as being in the same "class" as those "walmart people." Some Target shoppers even bought into that stupidity, sneering, "Oh, I would NEVER go to walmart!! Wellll, guess what.. With changes in the wind, loss of jobs, homes, autos, the same folks who frowned on wally world shoppers are now moving like herds stampeding after a shot was fired. Not only are they barreling through ww, dollar stores and pawn shops can't be built fast enough to handle the traffic.

I was just remembering Sam Walton's proud banners touting that his products were all made in the USA.

Yes, but WalMart has more product! Target sends people to WalMart when they don't have an item you want!
Also, Target management sucks. They don't stand behind noted sales in their aisles, and only go by what their computer registers indicate is on sale.

Once again VSarBktrash is injecting politics into this article. No way will I or my family will believe that Mitt romney has done anything good for this country. Ask the people in Freeport, Ill. who his company is making their employees train their replacements from China and closing the plant to move it to China. More Trash talking.

What company did Romney raid? I sure hope he doesn't get elected, he's going to be so bad for this country!!! He has flipflopped on just about everything, I know I'm not supposed to get political on this subject. I did work for Walmart for 18 years until I had to retire (Doctor's orders) Everything that people say about Walmart is true, all they care about is making money for themselves!! They sure don't think about the people that work for them!!!

Bears repeating!! shalebrook
"Target is a great company intiitally bankrolled by Mitt Romney and Bain Capital when it consisted of one single store location. Target Corporation now has a whopping 355,000 employees. Pretty good job creation for what the Obamameister calls a corporate raider, eh?"

The price difference is so low between these stores, one is better off shopping at the store they enjoy most. Target and Kmart are much closer to my home than Walmart so those are the stores I go to most. Plus they are smaller and every day items are more accessible.

Also, got tired of every single clerk telling me their life story as I checked out. Seriously, I don't care that you suck so bad as a parent that your kids are with CPS, that your mom won't talk to you and you live in your car.

Their prices are pretty comparable, but WalMart is a pit. True story, one time my husband and I went to WalMart, 10' in the door, there is a turd (people poo) lying on the floor, been run over a few times, and the staff just pretended not to see it, walking around it. Disgusting, try to never go there ever.
