Savings Experiment: Phantom Power

Would you consider unplugging your electronics and small appliances?

Did you find our video on phantom power helpful?

When it comes to saving electricity, turning your electronics off when they're not in use seems like a no-brainer. However, even when appliances are not on, they still consume some energy. This is called phantom power.

Many gadgets and electronic devices are using power simply by being plugged into the wall. The wattage may not seem like a lot, but it does add up over time. An estimated 5-10 percent of energy use is caused by phantom power, so if you prevent that waste, you can potentially save yourself a month's worth of electricity.

Let's take a look at some of the biggest culprits. DVD players use 10.58 watts while not in use, and CD players eat up about 18.4 watts. Then there's the TV, which sucks up 21 watts even when you're not enjoying it.

Phantom PowerThe best way to rid yourself of phantom power is to invest in power strips. Not only are they inexpensive and offer surge protection, but they allow you to shut off multiple devices with just one switch, too. So, instead of unplugging each of your electronics individually, plug them into a power strip to save money with just one click.

Yes.....and then I have to sit there and reset every different thing from my coffee maker to my T.V.s which all are different models and manufacturers and all use different processes. Then there is my ancient computer ( by any standard, 8+ years is a dinosaur ) which I simply run the risk of it never starting up again. Nope, not needed.

Losing the saved settings is not worth setting off the power completely.

I don't think repeating this article every month(sometimes more frequent)is going to convince people to unplug & turn off.

The main problem here is that not enough people care. I don't need the clock on my microwave, so there's no need to reset it. I rely on battery operated clocks and a battery lasts 2 or 3 years-just an AA cell. If you care about saving energy or money, the inconvenience is minor. If you don't care, no amount of encouragement will make you change your habits.

Well, you know...wind energy is free. By that logic, once the turbines are paid for, the electricity should be all most be nill in cost. Simply have to pay for basic maintenance of the power grid ( long since established ) and workers ( always there anyway ). Instead, my bill gets higher and higher and I make sure I use the absolute least energy I can even while home.

Everything I have is Energy Star. Not worth the time or hassel to unplug them then the time to not only re set the clocks but on some items restore all the saved settings you will lose if left unplugged to long.

Why waste anything that you don't have to? Even adjusting for convience only takes seconds. The effects are not limited to you for the day or the dollar. It will be your children's children having to suffer for your instant gratification and lack of seeing beyond your minute in time. All the luxuries we take for granted today were impossible not long ago. Appreciate how we don't have to live as they did 100 years ago. Just a thought I doubt most people care for.
