Many American companies are lauded for their rapid ascents to greatness -- firms that go in a short time from minor players to industry leaders, renowned for innovation, phenomenal growth, and soaring share prices. Think Google (GOOG) or Apple (AAPL), for example.

Then at the other end of the spectrum are the well-known firms that crater, going fairly rapidly from industry stalwarts to crippled, bankrupt or entirely gone. Recent additions to that list have included (the parent of American Airlines), Borders, and Eastman Kodak.

Somewhere in the middle fall the companies that were once leaders in their industries but have fallen hopelessly behind. They may remain in business for years or even decades after their best days. Their executives will struggle to find better strategies, and often their boards seek new management. But, really, their chances to engineer turnarounds have passed. Competitors have taken too much market share; their products and services are no longer in demand.

24/7 Wall St. has compiled a list of these companies that won't be making comebacks -- names that you know well, but that will never be leaders again.

How they were picked: 24/7 Wall St. examined companies, mostly in the S&P 500, that have lost most of their market share, suffered sharp share price erosion, and posted sharp earnings declines. Almost all have lost money recently. Each has seen a more than 50% drop in share price in the last five years. Each has powerful competitors that have built market share advantages or moats around their businesses that are nearly impossible to overcome.

More from 24/7 Wall St.

I have a great investment option available to an individual or a group of investors. $1.3 to $ 6.0 M needed rate of return would be 40% a year, and its taxable free income. Email ddacapital@aol.com for more information. This is NOT A SCAM.

I'm not that concerned with whether JC Penney has special sales or not as, generally, you could find some decent products for a reasonable price. Also, they can support whomever they want and contribute to whatever cause they want and that's their business. But, DON'T go shoving homosexuality in my face or trying to force me to find it acceptable, because that just isn't going to happen. THAT is what they did wrong and why, after 50 years, I have stopped shopping at JC Penney. They just weren't content to be in the business of retail sales and arrogantly thought they could manipulate our social mores.

SchMITTens is the problem that many of the CEOs of companies like this. As a former employee of Nextel (10 years), after the merger, I found that many of the jobs Sprint had were outsourced position that Nextel had on the US American Shore. Many of those positions at Sprint are in Manila. Those "employees" are grossly underpaid, are forced to sleep at the office in "dorms" to insure that they will be at work the next day. The are not allowed to leave the premises to visit family members at the end of the day. This is information I gathered from the horses mouth. These kind of companies don't want you to know what is happening overseas. They are the situations YOU would not tolerate for yourself. If it weren't for Unions, Americans would be working in these types of conditions. If it weren't for Unions, you would be paid in "corporate tokens" rather than US currency, as the now defunked Qwest Telecommunications that didn't pay more than the minimum wage to work at the local phone company but gave you points to shop at the now defunked Qwest Store to purchase all this really cool product with the Qwest logo on everything. Just what I want. Cheap merchandise from China rather than US cash. That is what Romney represents.

Good riddance JCP. The day they hired Ellen Degenerate as their spokesperson, they sealed their fate. Companies are going to learn that they will pay for their support of the homosexual agenda against the wishes of mainstream America, (which is by the way still the majority in this country). Power to the majority of American consumers.

I disagree. We are not intentionally harming anyone; we do respect Gays as people and do not hate them or anyone. Gays think Christians are harming them because we refuse to accept their lifestyle and so as this issue heats up across America Gays are rubbing their lifestyle in Christians face in a hateful manner and refuse to let up until we agree to accept their lifestyle. We can respect and not hate Gays and at the same time respectfully disagree. Christians will never agree that lifestyle is acceptable it has been condemned in the Bible just as many other behaviors. So if forcing Christians to say they accept that lifestyle is you goal save yourself the pain you’re causing yourself, it will never happen. We love everyone and do not hate anyone but that does not mean we openly accept and agree to behavior the Bible has written is sinful. I do agree that Jesus loves everyone but that does not mean he accepts any behavior. We are all sinners, every one of us. The bible teachers that sinners must accept their wrong doing repent (stop doing the sinful behavior) and then pray to GOD for forgiveness. Likewise our Christian faith teaches us to love and respect everyone, which we do but again that does not mean to accept every behavior especially a behavior the Bible has clearly identified as wrong, an abomination. Christians accept everyone as people and do not hate anyone. Gays already have our respect and we do not hate them but we will never accept Gay behavior it is Biblically wrong. Gays in turn are angered by Christians not accepting their behavior as ok.

The problem with JCPenney is that the prices are worst than when they were using coupons...you go in their site and like anything that is on sale and is out of stock all the time...if you don't have anymore update the page and take it out of the list. Lower your prices to a real deal...took coupons away and prices seems to have double from the last couple years...things I bought a year ago are twice more this year and no coupon to bring the price down. JCPenney is a Joke.
