Strayer Education Hits Estimates, but GAAP Results Lag Last Year's

Strayer Education (NAS: STRA) reported earnings on July 26. Here are the numbers you need to know.

For the quarter ended June 30 (Q2), Strayer Education met expectations on revenues and earnings per share.
Compared to the prior-year quarter, revenue dropped and GAAP earnings per share shrank significantly.
Margins contracted across the board.

EPS came in at $1.85. The 14 earnings estimates compiled by S&P Capital IQ forecast $1.86 per share. GAAP EPS of $1.85 for Q2 were 27% lower than the prior-year quarter's $2.53 per share.

For the quarter, gross margin was 48.3%, 510 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Operating margin was 24.7%, 590 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter. Net margin was 14.5%, 360 basis points worse than the prior-year quarter.
Next quarter's average estimate for revenue is $128.9 million. On the bottom line, the average EPS estimate is $0.88.
Next year's average estimate for revenue is $579.0 million. The average EPS estimate is $6.89.
The stock has a two-star rating (out of five) at Motley Fool CAPS, with 260 members out of 327 rating the stock outperform, and 67 members rating it underperform.
