Very unfortunate that we cannot close a damper at the top of the water heater. It would cease the convection of hot air rising up through and out of the water heater 24 hours/365 days.. It would stop cold/cooler air at the floor from bing pulled into the water heater and cooling the water as it flows up the center tube.

If you have gas hot water or oil consider the investment inon demand hot water heater. it requiress an up front investment, but the savings add up every month. a

You can wash your dishes, take a bath, shampoo your hair and do your laundry at night. When going out of town for two or three days, I turn off my hot water and still find it warm when I return. At night I turn off the air conditioner and use a floor fan which I point directly at my bed.

June 25 2012 at 2:20 PM Report abuse Permalink rate up rate down ReplyHeres a VERY GOOD savings idea for SUMMER and WINTER; simply TURN OFF THE HOT WATER HEATER, it works against the AC, they fight each other all day long ramping up your electric bill, it takes about 12 hours for hot water to dissapate almost all its heat into house. (if your hot water tank is in garage it helps but you'll still save big because hot water only takes about 4 minutes to heat to point to where you can bathe or shower in it. , the rest of the time you are wasting energy, Wash in cold water, it works well)... the bigger your family the more you'll save. Keep ac off unless you are home, Turn ac down to 2 degrees after entering home, use ceiling or other fans to keep comfortable, the ac extracts the water from the air making it much more comfortable, if you are not used to this just do it 1 deg per month until you are acclimated. (Hey your great grandparents didn't have ac at all). You may also find alot of savings by using window units in bedrooms at night, why cool all the house when you are only using the bedroom, try to make it like you only cool or heat the rooms you are using. ..... Use the savings of about $100 /mo to buy a ticket to a nice vacation. ! ! or make that extra 13th payment on your house which will reduce a 30 year fixed mortgage to only about 18 years.. $$$$$ (yes you are paying 3x for your house using normal fixed rate 30 year mortgage).
