There are many different cable providers out there, but how do you know which one to choose? Here, our experts break things down between four major companies so you can ultimately figure out how to cut your monthly costs.

In this scenario, we compared the basic cable packages from Comcast, Time Warner Cable, DirecTV and Verizon Fios. As a general rule of thumb, the number of average channels affects the monthly cost -- the more you have, the more you'll spend. However, when we broke things down to a per channel cost, Comcast, Time Warner and DirecTV were roughly the same, while Verizon Fios was notably cheaper at 45 cents per channel. That package offers 200 channels, but at $90 per month.

By this rationale, you might think that your cable bill is dependent on how many channels you're willing to pay for, but there's one more factor to consider. Most households own an high definition television on which you'll want to watch HDTV. So, to get your money's worth, you need to consider how many HD channels are offered by each provider.

Of the total number of channels offered in the basic plan, only a fraction are offered in HD. In the cases of Time Warner, DirecTV and Verizon Fios, only 21-26 percent of their channels are high definition. However, a whopping 95 percent of Comcast's programming is offered in HD, which makes it the clear winner.

Cable television choices listFind out which cable providers service your area and do a little price comparing while keeping these points in mind. If you decide to stay with your current provider, try asking a customer service representative how you can lower your cable bill. You may be able to take advantage of a current promotion, and the provider will usually go the extra mile to keep good customers happy.

Ah, the good ol' 1990's--the decade of deregulation. Deregulation of telecommunications meant consumers would have more choices and lower rates. Another congressional lie perpetrated on the citizens after our representatives were wined, dined and bribed by lobbyists.

Your article seems to be slanted toward the idea that everyone has more than one cable company in their area. We have one choice, Charter. It's constantly out and is the highest priced internet and cable I've seen in 4 states, and they have the worst customer service. Yes, I do realize there is the choice of satellite service, but as a renter, that choice isn't available to me, most landlords will not allow you to put a dish on their building or on a pole in their yard.

Why in the world would you pay to watch commercials, 10 year old movies, and the media that creates news instead of reporting it- This is a mess, just a money grabbing company that delivers nothing of value

I would be glad to pay $1 per channel that I really watched without having to also purchase the tons of channels that I never watch. That would make my cable bill about $15 a month.

I have COMCAST. I have the basic package. I have channel after channel of crap that noone with an IQ higher than 45 would ever watch. Why can't I pick what channels I want and what channels I don't want to make up the number of channels that I receive in my cable package?

I just reduced service on a TWC account getting my bill down from $140/month to $85/month. Yes, there might be an occasional show we will miss, but for the most part that extra $50+ a month didn't serve any purpose to us. I would suggest that everyone take a look at what you are paying for and ask yourself if you really need those stations. TWC didn't exactly provide "friendly" service as I was doing this and kept trying to sell me more services and packages. Took a while to get to the person who would actually make the adjustments as well ,all the while telling me I was one of there best long time customers...yeah..right.

FIOS isn't even offered down here because they are still 30 years behind everyone else.

i have cox cable, internet and phone. my bill is now about $190/mo. i have hbo and some other stations that go with that particular box of programs, such as ME TV and Antenna TV, and stations like that. what bothers me are all the taxes that each different accessory incurs. is there a way to have all these taxes investigated to see if they are necessary?

Cable users also get stick with a lot of dubious 'taxes' and 'fees' which add up to a good portion of the bill. This article is nothing more than a glorified advertorial, a paid ad promoting certain cable companies. The worst of them all is VERIZON FIOS, who will charge the user $ for contacting their customer support for assistance.
